How can 4 people quickly rob 1 million euros worth of Apple stuff? I know the Apple retail prices are high , but still, that is a lot of carrying to do?

Exactly. If the average price of a stolen unit was 1000 euros, that's 1000 units. Did they have a truck? There's more to this story then what's being told and I would suspect that it was an inside job. Besides, I didn't realize that Apple kept such large inventories in stock at any particular store. It had always seemed to me that Apple has "just-in-time" deliveries.

Well, I'm French and live in paris.
Whilst I wouldn't focus like you on the racial aspect - which does not predispose anyone for any mean actions in case you forgot it - it is true that Paris (where I live) has become a very difficult, insecure city.

Using the subway to go back home after NYE was like going through an apocalyptic scene of drunk idiots and scum assaulting everyone, trying to touch girls, to steal purses and bags, shouting, vomiting in the metro, throwing junk out of the bins in every directions. I went home with the content of a McFlurry spread on my new suit after a stupid drunk teenager under drugs threw it at me and his five friends tried to get into an argument with me and my girlfriend. Police don't do anything and can't do anything without being heavily criticized by the whole population. There is clearly a total lack of respect, of education, of hygiene, of order in the city.

While it is obvious that many poor migrants or children of migrants take part in the riots and disrupt the quietness of other citizens, let's face it, rioting, getting drunk and revolting against order is something deeply rooted in the French culture. Poor, inoccupied people, who assault or revolt or do graffitis on the walls, among whom quite a few migrants, act in a way that is very... French. Because their own parents and also because school, the French school system, failed to educate them. A way that does not solve any problems by the way... The more it is, the more I despise the shape the French society is turning into.

As a visitor to Paris, I felt just the opposite. I felt like there was sense of dignity and an awareness of history and architecture that I simply don't feel living in New York. I have a friend living just outside of Paris and while he is certainly a very well-educated decent person, his two kids are the nicest and politest kids I've ever met anywhere. I saw a group of pre-teen or early teen kids at lunch break or recess in one of the parks and they all (regardless of ethnicity) seemed extremely well behaved and aware and I felt they were far superior to the groups of American school kids that I'm familiar with.

I think in every society, there are the dregs and criminals (of any socio-economic group) and there are those who value culture and education. I think the masses have been "dumbed down" for years in all western societies and that's probably not going to change, but at the same time there's lots of decent people accomplishing both ordinary and amazing things.

Of course, if I faced a bunch of drunks assaulting people, I might feel quite differently, but while there's no excuse for such behavior under any circumstance, you can't judge a society (not even your own) based on what happens on New Year's Eve. In any case, maybe I'd feel a little differently if I lived there for many years, but as a visitor to Paris, I love the place.

LOL. You must rarely leave your house. Meanwhile, California is more like Mexico, where without Spanish it will be difficult to buy a bigmac. Whites are today a minority with a significant number of Mexicans to be unaccounted for as a bonus to the problem. Meanwhile, almost 100% immigrants coming to the USA are poorly educated, the wave of doctors, engineers and other skilled professionals coming to the US has largely ended in the 80s after the post war boom. Meanwhile, you are forgetting about south central in LA and other numerous wonderful ghettos across the states. Why not a honeymoon in east LA instead of Paris? Romantic and all Americam, where the always ready and heavily armed full of courage airborne equipped police lead by officer Dick will make sure your sorry ass with your Costco beauty will all be safe! Forget going to France. You will hate the experience, where you will find the city not resembling your favored mall you grew to be so accustomed to, the food will be foreign to you and the prices will just piss you off. Your bride will suddenly look crappy with the background of millions of people dressed actually in something other than your lovely GAP outfit. Really, just stay a home, or do the very American visit to Europe. Go to Vegas! You will see Venice, Paris, all in one place, you will hit the all you can eat buffet and you both will look now like a magnificent couple. Yeeha!

Most Mexicans ARE white, as I explained above. Stop thinking that anglo-saxons are the only fair-skinned people in the world, please.

Only in the US of A are people benighted and racist enough to create a separate fake ethnic group called "latinos".

Ah, from the US of A. Figures.

There should not be a requirement during a robbery to just comply and say "I sure hope they don't kill all us witnesses afterward". You don't have to leave that up to them.

Would you even allow police to shoot an armed robber who was pointing a gun at someone? Or would you require them to take a "wait and see" approach?

Apple would have sold it for 1 million euros... so that means it was actually worth 100,000 euros...

trolling aside... the company didn't lose that much money really, they just didn't gain that money... unless they have insurance, in which case they lost nothing.

Stop this annoying twitch in your left albino eye. I have not implied anything anywhere pertaining to skin hues within the Mexican people or any other people. I am not too sure why you are so obsessed with the tonal balance of peoples skins? I only referred to Mexicans as Mexicans and as a majority group. I am also not certain about any type of often evolving labeling whether we question term Latino, African American, Arab Nebraskan, Alaskan Eskimo, or any other which sometimes suites a particular situation better than others. Ethnicities can be both simple and complex to identify dending largely how specific one herd kept its copulating inventory over often many generations. Something which with the advent of modern transportation and past colonizations and wars is today indeed a rather difficult task. Thus, they are often self identification processes, some evolutionary changes which may, or may not reinventorise a given group. A good example may be "black" and "African American" in the US, where if we speak of color, it is clear that the once imported group is today much lighter than when it first hit the shores of the American continents. There.

big companies don't buy much insurance

It's quite unlikely that Apple has insurance for things like this.

Insurance companies are out to make money. Most, if not all, larger companies "self-insure" most things - it's cheaper for them to absorb random losses than to contribute to the insurance company's profits.

I insure my car, because an unexpected $50K charge to replace it would disturb my investment strategy (and much more so for liability and medical losses).

Apple's 1M€ loss is noise to them (especially since their real loss is the production cost of the lost items, or about a third of the retail cost loss).

Nice to get the facts from a history major./

Correct me if I'm wrong.

In the US now we have legalized casinos in all states, not a good thing in my opinion, but the entertainment it brings may be considered worthwhile.

If the French hadn't messed up Vietnam, we wouldn't have had the Vietnam war just because they thought they deserved to have their colony returned to them after WWII.

If the Brits didn't f|_|cK up the Indian sub-continent, we wouldn't have had Al Queada setup in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Therefore, no 9/11 or world wide Islamic terrorism. Also, the Brits messed up Iran and Iraq, and thankfully President Truman didn't let them mess up Saudi Arabia and we in America setup ARAMCO for an equitable split of oil profits.

They actually taught you this in school? No wonder the U.S. is screwed!

Yea, but in all probability the guy knew he bought a hot item. You don't pay retail for hot merchandise, so if I am offered an item on the street at half price I am certain it's stolen.

But not when the person has it $100 off because they just got 2 for Christmas and don't have the receipts to return them. There's 1,000 different ways to sell stuff without people knowing it is stolen.

Doesn't add up !

Am I the only one who thinks this does not make sense? The would have had to steal 500 2000 euro computers - can they really carry that many? I think not ! Or, did they somehow steal some cash?
