I called an apple store and they said 'no,' they will not match walmart's $127 sale price on an iphone 5.

I was under the understanding that apple retail stores had the authority to match their competitors.

Has anyone had success getting the iphone 5 at a discounted price? Do you have to ask a manager rather than a member of the sales staff?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA......... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH TEARS IN MY EYES.....HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

Did you really just ask that question? This is apple we're talking about after all. How can they make billions in profit if they price match?

One upon a time I worked in retail. This guy walked in with a coupon, it has a value on it. The guy wanted to buy an item with it so I go fine, your coupon plus $50 extra, then he starts to haggle with me, and points me to the back of the coupon which happens to say NEGOTIABLE, and he wouldn't butch! He took "negotiable" as "lets deal!"

They do have that authority, on the other hand they lack any kind of incentive of lowering their prices because another retailer gives away their profit margin in an attempt to get people to also purchase products on which they have much larger profit margins.

They don't lead on price, and they can match competitor's prices, however not on iPhones.

Apple stores have no price matching authority on any iPhone, iPad, iPod, Apple branded accessories or Computer SKU.

There are no exceptions that can be authorized at the retail store level.

Non-Apple branded access may be discounted at the store's discretion.

Sure. I'll speak up. Apple does price match (usually during the holidays) but never on iPhones (unless authorized by corporate during big sales usually again during the holidays). It is Apple's biggest seller and they don't have to price match. Though I'm not sure if they price match anymore. I haven't worked there in over a year.

Pricing

Apple, famously, has the same pricing philosophy as Luis Vuitton.. It sells premium products at premium prices, and it never discounts. that philosophy has made it an aspirational brand worldwide.

Actually, they can. The only thing that cannot be discounted is the iPhone (at least in the UK, the system physically wont allow it). Everything else is possible. If anything, they're more likely to discount/match Apple accessories than lower-margin 3PP.

Heck specialists can discount without prior authorisation from a manager up to 10%. Stores can do what they like - if they want to give an iMac away, they can do (something which I've seen happen) - when it comes to things like that it's ALL down to store level authorization.
