If Apple did this, Apple fangirls will not be able to defend their product by saying how Android phones use plastic, etc. etc.
But... they're not really getting an iPhone. They'll be getting a cheap plastic piece of crap like every other smartphone on the market.I can see the market. Alot of people I know would love to own a iPhone but can't due to cost.

If they still insist on having an iPhone, they're better off getting an iPod Touch and a REAL cell phone... it's a wonderful combination and much cheaper.
but you are tied to a contract. This will be primarily used by non-contract folks that do not want to pay high prices for the iPhone.
I wonder how they will make it cheaper.
Slower A chip?
Slower and less memory?
No GPS?
Stick with the 4S case rather that the 5?
The "plastic haters" lives are about to change. Apples going to knock them off their high horse & prove that plastic is an excellent material to use.
All other manufacturers already knew this, only the elitist Apple worshipers programmed by Steve, were convinced if it wasn't aluminum it wasn't worth buying.
My how things change.
I don't like it, does BMW use cheaper material to make cars more affordable to people? No they make top cars.
quality>>>quantity
Apple's margins on current iPhones are north of $300 per phone.
On a $149 phone, they'd be lucky to pocket $10.
There aren't enough smarphone buyers on the planet to make up for a 30x headwind.
Only changing the case doesn't seem like enough to offer a considerable discount over the usual price cut for older models. Even an 8gb downgrade on flash memory seems like too little
Many companies sell $149 phones. It must be worth it to them, or else why would they bother?
Not me, for sure, but part of what makes the Apple brand the Apple brand is stuff like the aluminum casing, the glass and metal surfaces that are flush with each other... it's a high quality standard. And I'm afraid this is one step towards cheapening the Apple brand like happened in the 90s when the Macintosh line was diced into dosens of different models that were all indistinguishable from the rest of the competition. Then Steve Jobs came back and straightened things out, saved the Mac line and turned Apple into the most valuable company in world! Why the hate on for plastic? Not everything plastic needs to look ugly and besides most people put their phone in a rubber case so who really cares what it's made of?
And on top of that, they'll still probably hook you with a contract where you pay $30-$50 every month which is a net gain of *caculates*... $0.I don't see any logic behind this rumor. Supposedly, switching out to a plastic shell will reduce the cost of the device by $200-$300?
My guess, if it will exist, is a 3GS with updated internals that can be compatible with iOS 7.
I still don't understand the point of this when you can get an iPhone 4 for free or a 4S for $100. Plus you get fancy glass and aluminum enclosures with those two.

That's why Samsung... I mean Toyota sells more cars.
Or a simpler solution is to just restrict the market. There are plenty of items that are market restricted.
Isn't there already a cheaper iPhone? I think it's called the iPhone 4S. And there's also a practically free one that's the iPhone 4. Why waste the time and resources to make an even cheaper phone and spend time manufacturing it with the already high demand of the whatever new one Apple will introduce. Makes no sense to me.
And both companies are successful while still maintaining a full product line covering all price ranges.
Can you believe Toyota is responsible for the $14,000 Yaris and the $120,000 Lexus LS Hybrid?
I think people are worried that a cheaper iPhone will cheapen the brand. I'm not so sure. Think different products for different people.
A Lexus buyer isn't looking at the Yaris... and a Yaris buyer can't afford a Lexus at all. But both cars have a market.
If Apple produces a $300 plastic "budget" iPhone... it will be an additional model to compliment the metal "good" iPhone. The good iPhone isn't going away.
