In some games I like to use the F keys: F1, F2, etc. But when I press them it just brightens the screen, how do I disable the screen brighten part and just use the F key for a keybind?

The Bluetooth keyboard is, as far as I know, the only Mac desktop keyboard that has the brightness and function keys overlaid, and that has a function key too.

You can change this behaviour by going into the Keyboard & Mouse preference pane and checking "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys".

Solution

The solution basically is in System Prefs, under Keyboard...

Enable the option entitled "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys"

The following is another MacRumors post discussing ways to toggle this option that doesn't include the pain of opening System Prefs each time...

I've bundled up a similar script that also uses Growl notifications to GitHub; see the
project page on GitHub or download the app.
