xda-developers - View Single Post - [INFO] LG Nexus 4 Production Date and Place Identification

Probably out of the LG database by poking at the serial numbers.

Yup. Poking away.
BTW, over 752K...

The link to poke at the serial #.
http://csmg.lgmobile.com:9002/csmg/b2c/client/auth_model_check2.jsp?esn=

A Little Sleuthing Leads Nexus 4 Enthusiasts To Estimate About 400K In Sales Of The Device | TechCrunch
How did they do it? They’ve taken the IMEI numbers of their phones and backtracked the production number of their devices using an LG mobile link that’s usually used for finding new firmware. An IMEI number, or International Mobile Station Equipment Identity number, is usually printed on the battery compartment of the inside of the phone. It can be used to prevent stolen phones from accessing a network.

If you take this link and put your IMEI number at the very end, this LG site will spit back out the IMEI followed by a long string of characters that looks something like this: “LGE960 ACAGBK 212KPHG188745 20121206 GLOBAL/GLOBAL N N”

If you break this string apart, you get:
LGE960 = phone model
A = ?
CA = Country where the device was sold. (Others include ‘US’ for the U.S., ‘HK’ for Hong Kong, ‘AU’ for Australia and so on.)
G = Storage (G = 16GB, 8 = 8GB)
BK = Color
2 = ?
12 = Production Month (November)
K = Production Country (Korea)
PHG = ?
188745 = The line or production number, showing that phone was the 188,745th device made.

from poking at the serial number, they have found the following

October: 70,000 devices produced
November: 90,000
Dec: 210,000
January: ?

there is a good chance that January production number might be around 550,000. LG wasn't kidding when they said they have ramped up production.

752,000 (now) - 70,000 - 90,000 - 210,000 = 382,000 so far in January. And the month has about 10 more days to go.

There is a good chance that the Nexus 5 will be basing off the LG Optimus G Pro. It has been officially announced on Japanese carrier DoCoMo and here the specs:

The LG Optimus G Pro boasts a 5-inch 1080p display, nearly no bezel, 1.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro, 2GB RAM, 32GB storage with microSDXC card slot, 3000mAh battery, 13MP rear camera and comes with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out of the box.

If LG/Google offer the "NEXUS 5 with 16GB" with the specs above at $349, they better have a lot of devices in stock because it will be even more popular than the Nexus 4.

here's what LG said at CES

LG Electronics SVP James Fisher went off on a tangent during the firm's packed press conference at CES this morning, revealing that the LG Nexus 4 is just "the first of many" Nexus products it is working on, and hinting that the two companies might be secretly developing another smartphone or tablet device.

Fisher said, "Through our collaboration with Google, we launched the LG Nexus 4 smartphone. This is the first of many devices to come from our growing partnership with this very selective company."

Wow, that was fast. The phone was out of the factory in Korea at 18 Jan, so it managed the whole shipping - customs - distribution chain in less than a week.

And someone said google is dragging their feet with distribution...

Jan 18 production: the 650986th device manufactured

Jan 22 production: the 750,000th device manufactured

The 16GB Nexus 4 sold out in Australia in 20 minutes.

It sold out in France, Spain too after the first day.

The 8GB Nexus 4 in the USA is now 3-4 weeks (instead of 1-2 weeks yesterday).

Look like the demand is still outpacing the supply.

I find the Nexus product line very interesting. The Phone and Tablet lines have some similarities but also many differences.

This is a business point of view.

LG:
Make a Nexus to be associated with cutting edge Google

Make Nexus phones at little to no profit at the expense of not selling other LG Android phones that actually earn a profit to maintain their business.

Hope making an Nexus device influences Android users to buy an LG Android device as their next Android phone. Hopefully a profitable LG flagship phone.

OEM Android makers don't have the stickiness of Apple, Rimm, or Windows. Why stick with LG when Moto and Samsung make the same thing (skins excluded)

The only time that someone sticks with Dell vs HP or vice versa is if they had problems and the quality of customer service. If they didn't have problems, price plays a major factor.

The reason there was a strained supply of Nexus 4 phones was bc LG didn't want to waste their resources on phones that earn them little profit, just goodwill to the android community. They'd prefer to earn some money so they can afford to make the next big thing.

The problem is that in the Android situation, Google is King. The OEMs fight to do a Nexus device to be perceived as "cool" but loose money or potentially loose sales of their other devices that earn more profit. Google earns the money in this situation, but the OEMs don't earn nearly as much.

I'll speculate here that over the lifetime use of a Nexus 4, Google may make more profit from data collection and advertising sales than LG will make selling a Nexus 4. Hence the lack of supply.

LG executive said this to your theory that LG on purpose limit the supply of Nexus 4:

http://www.androidauthority.com/nex...ld-out-popularity-explained-lg-france-148214/

Meanwhile, LG has denied the report, and made further comments in France where Cathy Rubin, LG France’s Mobile division director talked to Challenges.fr about Nexus 4 production, availability and sold out status.

According to the exec, Nexus 4 production has not been stopped, and it will be increased in the following months. Apparently it’s not LG at fault for the lengthy delivery times but Google’s.

The Search giant is said to have missed the mark when ordering Nexus 4 units. Google reportedly used sales data from the previous Nexus model to place Nexus 4 orders, but these numbers “were lower than the actual demand.” Starting from mid-February, “there will no longer be any tension in the market,” according to the exec.

October: 70,000 devices produced
November: 90,000
Dec: 210,000
January: 580,000 produced
February: on track for 650,000 +

The executive also said that LG is selling the Nexus 4 to Google at a profit.

Hey I like this polite discussion. Let's keep this discussion to business rather than Platform favoritism on both sides. (Not us but the other commentators)

The android authority is a rumors site just like this one. So let's take that with a grain of salt like the headlines on this website.

Let's put PR statements aside bc we don't know if LG earns $1, or $00.01 per Nexus 4. It could be more but nothing close to Samsung and HTC

If you ever worked in or managed a factory you would understand this production. It can be complicated by accountants too.

I'll add more soon if you are interested. It's all business

Whats with the obsession with how many they sold? It's not like its the 40-50 million Apple sold.

Given that parties directly involved in this contradict your statement, what are you basing you claim of LG deliberately limiting supply on? Statements have been made publicly that the limited supply was due to Google massively underestimating demand because they based their Nexus 4 manufacturing orders on sales figures of the galaxy nexus.

So you really think Google based their order on the old galaxy nexus? With all the amazing android growth? I got a 2 bridges to sell you.

That's all PR

If you are really interested in how factories work i'll write a simple model regarding this situation.

What are you willing to contribute?

You do know that just because Google is not making a profit that doesn't mean LG isn't right? I bet LG is making a profit of the phones it is Google who is not profiting. What stake does lg have in this to for go profit? None so they wouldn't.

1. There was only about 12 months from the release of the Galaxy Nexus to the Nexus 4 and during that time Android has been growing at a fairly stable and predictable rate. Google has precise numbers about each and every Android phone which is activated so they would be capable of extrapolating a number based on the previous Nexus sales and the rate at which Android grew over the year.

2. LG would have been made aware of the margins that they would be seeing on sales of the Nexus 4 prior to them entering into this agreement. They chose to proceed.

3. If this was just PR, why admit any fault on the part of Google? They could have come up with dozens of other reasons which don't involve admitting they made an error of judgement (yea, that's really good PR spin "we screwed up").

4. My version is supported by statements made by the companies involved, and your conspiracy theory is backed up by absolutely nothing.

5. How is it that immediately after the true demand for this device was realised, production has been massively ramping up as evidenced by the numbers? Why isn't LG still sabotaging their production and why isn't Google suing them for a massive breach of contract?

Produce ONE reliable source which supports your theory.

Where are your source links? Where is your background education?

My whole interest in this thread was about manufacturing, but you come with PR statements.?.

Sorry but I guess I was looking for people smarter than you to have a conversation with, you've never worked in a factor?

So if any educated people want to talk, I'd like to learn something from you

You're the one making the wild and unsubstantiated claims, why don't you try and back them up instead of personally attacking me? Because you've got nothing... no substance.

You couldn't even address ONE of my points. Instead you decide to call me uneducated. I have the following education:

Bachelor of Science (Psychology)
Bachelor of Computer Science
And i'm currently starting on a PhD.

Sorry for coming off rude.

Sorry to the OP for hijacking the thread.

If you want to discuss this more, I'd be happy to do that. I would like to focus on the benefits or downfalls that LG could experience by producing the Nexus 4. From a business point of view. If you want to engage in that type of discussion, I welcome your comments.

Serials going up to 490+k as of 16th of March. Or 160k in March. In other words, that little nexus army is marching forwards showing no signs of slowing down. Kind of strange.

Btw, around 680k.

Looks like they still don't even think about slowing down.

The monthly production rate will look like this (assuming 10,000 will be produced on March 30 and another 10,000 produced on March 31).

October: 70,000
November: 90,000
December: 210,000
January: 560,000
February: 404,000
March: 366,000

Total at the end of March: 1,700,000 units
