I am curious on my iphone plugged into itunes it shows 2574 pics but on my phone camera roll only has 1403 pics icloud has 1000, remaining are albums in photostream, are they taking up part of my 16gb? OTHER has 4.37 what is that?

yes, photostream pics are downloaded to the phone and take up space just like the camera roll. lets say you have 100 camera roll pics and 100 photostream pics. the total amount of pictures on the phone will be 200, each one a separate file. if each one is 1 MB, then you will have 200MB's of space used, not 100.
