820-2361-A vs. 661-4947 magsafe board

I Have the answer. Yes if you have the late 2008 unibody A1286 15 in MBP then the magsafe is probably going bad. I thought it was the battery going bad, but once I replaced the magsafe it started to charge the battery correctly, and it stayed charged. The part # is 820-2361-A. You can find them on ebay, but you might be getting a used part so beware. Also when you dig into the laptop, remove battery, then there's 8 small screws that attach the bottom plate. Once that is off you have to loosen all screws on the MB including fan and memory. Pull the screen cable out of the way. Pry up on the corner with the magsafe, unplug it, and work it out. The whole job will take 45 minutes if your slow and careful. Your number sounds like the 13 in version. If that's the case you need the other # Just add the mac number in the search and you'll find the right part.

They are the same part.

661-4947 - this is the part number on the box that technicians use (i.e. the part number of the box and contents)
820-2361-A - this is the factory part number (the part number of the bit inside the box - A stands for revision A)

Screws

I lost a screw for 820-2361-A

do you know what the specs are for the screw - and where to get a replacement. Is the screw be necessary for the power to work i.e. will a missing screw alone cause a power problem.

The only problem you may have is a misaligned magsafe socket, which could make charging difficult.

From memory, the middle hinge screw (or whichever of the 3 is longer) is the same size - you could, in theory, relocate one of those screws to the magsafe board.

The dc-in only has 2 screws - seems to be not misaligned - but I do need a replacent screw

If its not misaligned, don't worry about it!
