Can anyone recommend a good USB 3.0 hub with 7 ports (or more than that, though 4 and 7 seems to be the norm) that works well with an rMBP? There are dozens out there but some seem to have mixed reviews, especially with Macs.

Thanks

No idea. I have the Caldigit combo card. Worked fine with one drive plugged into the hub, but another drive or anything else and it would crap out.

It caused a kernal panic on my Macbook Pro when I attempted to use a USB 3.0 Hub.

I just tonight plugged in my USB 2.0 printer and Kensington Mouse to the USB 3.0 ports on my new Macbook Pro. :(

How do I reset the ports so that when I connect a USB 3.0 device (buying a USB 3.0 hub and external HD soon) it will re-configure the port for USB 3.0 ???

I also have a MBP-R and also had a USB-3 Hub from D-Link which I returned. However, I just found out that it was the way I connected it that was wrong (I have a new USB 3 Hub, but I know it was the way I connected because this one did the same thing UNTIL I READ THE APPLE FAQ: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5172#7

I found out that the FIRST device one plugs in to an external USB port CONFIGURES the external USB bus. Be sure that after powering up the computer, you plug in the USB 3 Hub to an external port FIRST. After that, you can plug things in and they will be recognized correctly. I verified this for my installation using the System Information page and looking at the USB window.

So plug in the USB 3 hub first. Then you can plug things into the hub (USB-3 or USB-2) and they should go to the correct bus when you look at the USB config.

Hope this is of some assistance.

So I just got off the phone with an Apple Care specialist. I was told that the ports USB ports are configured when you plug in a USB device however the configuration is NOT permanent. Meaning, EVERY TIME I plug something in, it will be configured for that device (speed).

Looks like I didn't mess anything up by plugging in the USB 2.0 printer (now) before a USB 3.0 device (at a later date).

Hopefully this will be clarified soon in the Apple Support document.

Thought I'd share an experience with the ongoing USB3 hub search many seem to be struggling with these days. A recent install required I choose something that was hopefully reliable and mountable in an out of the way place. I had 2 locations under and inside a desk/workstation.

First order of business was eliminating all the cheap products I could find. People tend to review based on looks/design as much as how it actually works. This was easy to filter in the usual places people shop, but frustrating in another sense. I finally discovered a hub that fit the bill, with a very sturdy build, hefty power supply and mounting arms. Too good to be true?

Warning, these are not pretty little hubs. I didn't trust the word "Industrial" until I installed and put them under use. They work. They mount! Perfect.
They make a 7 port version that's uglier than the 4 (or just as beautiful, depending on your perspective)

This looks promising, have you tested the speed with more than one USB 3 external hard disk?

I cannot find the 7-port version there... is there a link?

The web site is a little strange - hard to search

On one of the 2 hubs I set up, there are 2 Caldigit AV Pro drives & an OWC Mercury Elite. All 4TB HGST 5 platter drives. Copies and clones on the Caldigit drives were in the 190-200 range consistently. I didn't pay attention to the OWC speed. All 3 were tasking at one point with no apparent slow down I could notice. Sorry, nothing really official. I was only curious to a point on the job.

I'd like to buy the "Satechi Premium Aluminum 7 port USB 3.0 Hub" but apparently the thing is sold out for weeks. The design is not so atrocious like many of the other hubs linked here. Any idea were I can get one?

I don't know I've been waiting for this to be in stock for a while.

I also have the D-Link. It works pretty well. What you should know though is that when you connect the Hub to one of your USB 3.0 ports the other one on the rMBP will only work with USB 2.0 speeds. In my case at least.
I get USB 3.0 speed on the Hub though. I think it's a limitation of the rMBP.

One other problem I have with this Hub, when I move it around while connected, it sometimes looses the connection. Maybe a bad socket.
Also the power connector for the Hub is angled, not straight, which in my case is a bit of a bummer. Other than that it does its job.

Well, just ordered a new iMac and also bought a new printer which has an USB 2.0 option (ethernet & wireless), so was curious about this topic - from the above and reading the Apple support document: 1) the USB port regardless of which specification is plugged (2.0 or 3.0) is NOT configured permanently for that device - if 2.0 is plugged and remove and a 3.0 item added then the faster protocol will be recognized; 2) if an USB 2.0 hub is plugged then regardless of what is attached to the hub, slower speed will be used.

OK - now onto finding a good & reliable 3.0 hub - Dave :)

There was so many positive reviews (over 500 5 star) for the 7 port Uspeed I thought I would look into it a bit more why I couldnt get it to work with my 2012 Imac. As it turns out there is an issue with western digital hard drives and this hub where it wont work. That happens to be the device I was testing it with. After trying other things like blue ray player, mouse, and wacom device it seems to be working.

so the uspeed 7 port does work with 2012 imac as long as you dont use a western digital hard drive with it. why the western digital device is singled out im not sure.
