Seriously. A console is about GAMES right?

Did we see the games we wanted to see?

Why do you think Naughty Dog wasn't there to present us something?
Why do you think there was no Final Fantasy, No MGS, No LBP, No Tekken, No GT, No Resident Evil etc. etc. All the games we hoped to see where not there
Because those will all be shown at E3 in June. This was just a tease to cause hype, nothing more. It was never to unveil everything at once.

Also Resident Evil has been sucking for quite some time, imo. They need to go back to their roots with that series.

I've been a Sony fan from day one but when the year came by Sony became worse and worse. PS3 only had a few good titles but was nothing compared to the games available on the PS1 and PS2. Seeing this PS4 presentation going into history as the most boring one of all times I don't see a great future ahead.
It's too early to tell, but I do understand where you're coming from.

It sounds like you wanted more footage of explosions. You'll get that at E3, when the console details are announced on a grander scale to consumers, and not developers.

It was a 2 hour presentation to developers.
So why invite the press and hype the event rather than keep it quiet? Key games developers have probably known the specs and been working on their next set of games for a while now under a NDA.

This is just going to make people think twice about buying a PS3 and yet we still don't know what it looks like, how much it will cost and when it will be available. I seem to remember the PS3 and the PS Vita were both "going to be available for the holidays" and ended up being released in Europe many months late.

I don't know why they didn't simply wait until E3 and unveil the device and all the details then.

We have a PS3 and use it frequently. However, to be realistic, it is really just a Blu-ray player that we can watch Hulu, Netflix, Vudu, Amazon Prime and occasionally play game on it.

I'll probably still get a PS4 to replace our aging current console. But it certainly won't be at the top of the Christmas list.

The press doesn't just report to consumers, and Sony failed miserably at the PS3 launch in regards to third-party support. Using this platform to stress that it'll be easier to develop for the PS4 harmoniously with other next-general consoles was vital.

That information will be unveiled at E3, like nearly all major console release information is.

And have to share the limelight with Microsoft and Nintendo?

Oh dear lord, for the 800th time, it will be released before Christmas, as was stated in the press conference, which apparently almost nobody in here watched.

The cost? Much cheaper than the PS3. Why? Sony included the Blu-ray component when it was first launched to drown out HD-DVD from winning the format war... but it drove up the price considerably. The CPU/GPU is being done by AMD, a company that prides itself on cheap and power efficient hardware... instead of the CELL technology that Sony invested hundreds of millions of dollars into with Toshiba and IBM, which never grew outside of the PlayStation brand, which kept manufacturing costs high.

The PS4 is all PC parts with a specialized GPU. It should be much cheaper this time around than last generation.

You'll know what it will look like in June at E3. It's probably still a prototype so they couldn't unveil it or they just wanted to wait. It doesn't really matter.

I don't care about the controller's touch screen. Just make it not have awkwardly-placed thumbsticks, bad triggers, and a bad shape. The XBOX 360 has way better controllers.

Personally i LOVE the Duel Shock, i find the wonky location of the sticks on the Xbox remote horrid, i also prefer the triggers on the Duel Shocks.

not everyones hands are built the same,

That's the problem that the PS4 faces, technology has moved on and it's made the concept of a games console seem a little irrelevant for many now beyond gamers.

Looks like a good specification, given the lead time for designing and manufacturing the PS4 it looks like a healthy specification PC circa 2012? The processor is interesting as AMD Jaguar looks a decent contender in the tablet market if AMD can get their act together? I though the Jaguar was a quad core low power unit so I'm not sure where all this 8 core reference Sony are making is coming from?

Sony are in a difficult position, the PS4 has to be a success and they seem to have gone down the modular route of offering decent quality PC based components rather than highly bespoke items like the PS3 processor. Trouble is that it seems to provoke a bit a 'meh' response because there's nothing special under the hood. Part of the mythology with the Playstation is the perceived specialist hardware that gives them a unit far more powerful than PC's for a fraction of the cost. I doubt that will happen this time.

Then why not unveil the PS4 at the E3?

What we saw was footage we mostly already saw on youtube, E3 last year etc.
and specs we already knew. This presentation clearly was a complete waste of time to create a hype about.

I agree 1,2 and 3 were great. After that it went downhill. I do remember that media and players praised 4. (it was ok but no way as good)

It's too early to tell, but I do understand where you're coming from.

Then why not agree that this presentation was awful. If Sony did one thing it would be getting people exited about what MS is going to bring to the table.

Sony did a fantastic job yesterday. With 8GB GDDR5 the PS4 is going to be a powerhouse well beyond its release. Furthermore, the PlayStation concept never needed an overhaul but a sensible evolution, and thats exactly what Sony will provide with the PS4. The controller adds a few new gadgets, without losing the imo perfect design and feel. When i will be using this thing, i will want to feel at home immediately when i play FIFA14 etc. I dont want to relearn all the controls. Really happy with what they showed!

1. RE4 is easily the best game in the series.

2. Speak for yourself. I'm excited. I liked seeing the various developers talk about polygon count and graphical excellence in their games. I liked seeing concept art of the redesigned user interface. I liked seeing the new controller. The games will arrive at E3.

Just think Sony need to look at Apple for a 'launch event', it wasn't that but rather a preview event. They need to handle their PR a bit better and manage expectations.

I doubt it will have 8gb DDR5 either. It will be a mix of DDR3 and GDDR5.

Because I thoroughly enjoyed the presentation and I wasn't disappointed because I knew exactly what it was... to create a hype train until E3... nothing more... and to let developers know the PS4 will be a million times easier to develop for than last gen. The PS3's proprietary CELL technology made it very hard for developers to make cross-platform games simultaneously

This was the first official unveiling of a console that should be Sony's representation in the market for 5-10 years. They managed expectations just fine; they never once alluded to a launch event.

I've seen Apple make a bigger deal out of high resolution laptops than what Sony did yesterday.

Yes it will. It's 8 GB of unified memory being allocated to both GPU and CPU. You just said a fact isn't true, then made something up and stated it as an absolute. Good job.

I wasn't referring to the event itself but rather the way the media reported it, that's where Sony's PR comes in. No doubt Apple have had a few turkeys in their time but most of the time when they have an event they have something pretty substantial to show. There really wasn't much to show last night.

The Announcement of the playstation 4 is Apple news? It's just as much Apple news as the Wii U launch was. But the Wii U didn't get an article here. Seems Nintendo is not so popular with the staff here.

Anyways I'm no Playstation or sony fan. But I can see where they are going with this console. Targeting the hardcore gamer. And they'll love it. I just hope the games are fun. I probably won't ever get a playstation. But I still like fun games on a system. If they are fun then everyone wins. As in fun and not graphics or whatever else should the first priority.

Also I hope this does not make lazy programmers. I've seen games on much lesser systems that look visually brilliant. Metroid Prime on the Gamecube for one, looked amazing. In this light, I'd expect nothing short of every game to look amazing on the Playstation cause the machine has the capabilities to do so.

So fun and good graphics in games. That's what the PS4 will need to get a good market share. And reasonable console price too.

You don't understand the concept of hype then. Sony didn't say anything other than they were holding an event about the future of PlayStation. It was the media that created all this free hype for Sony. It's the same type of marketing that Apple does. This isn't anything new.

You don't do events like these to let developers know the PS4 is coming. They already knew the PS4 was getting out. Like I sad before.. we already knew what the specs were.

If you want to hype consumers you show games and games and more games. Games we love, Games that we grew up on, Games that blow us away. You show the top of PS3 titles and slam it with PS4 titles.

The hype created by this event was minimum at best. It seems like Sony doesn't listen to what most gamers want anymore. Al the great developers should explode on twitter right now saying how amazing the PS4 is but they don't. E3 has nothing to do with that btw.

You see the important part in my statement was the lack of it's absolute nature. Notice I opened with 'I doubt', try reading the post before responding.

As for whether it will or won't it still entirely up for debate given that we've not seen the console or even detailed specs. It wouldn't be the first time an electronics manufacturer have massaged it's specs. 8gb DDR5 would be insanely expensive.

There was plenty to show. They revealed the most important parts of the PS4, as well as the PSN Store, which will be huge for this console.

What you and others wanted was for them to unveil price, release date, and the consoles appearance. In due time. Sony did a good job in their presentation, and running out Blizzard and Bungie to show third party support is not something Sony PR is going to have to spin.

They're actually addressing most of what consumers wanted with PS4. The hype is also hardly minimum. They discussed a lot of amazing things... I don't exactly know what event you were watching.

Sony will probably be okay without your advice. E3 is the main event. Sony didn't have to say anything about PS4... they just wanted to.

That's right... you doubted a fact that's already been laid out.

8 GB of GDDR5 is not expensive. You're thinking about graphics cards as a whole... which has nothing to do with this.

----------

By the time 4K becomes the norm [i.e. even remotely affordable], we'll be talking about PlayStation 5.

Just seems pointless all these 4k tvs (i know they aren't mainstream yet but tech moves fast) and no content. If the ps4 had 4k im sure it would move pretty mainstream in alot less time. Oh well.
