Here's what I find amusing about this though.

Yes - they copied.

But who friggin really cares? How does this affect (you) personally? Just something to gripe about on a forum?

Yes - they copied Apple's passbook idea. I hardly find the feature revolutionary in the first place. I know that many venues for years have been using tickets you can print at home and can be scanned. This is really just an electronic version of that.

Big deal.

At the end of the day - it's only going to help Apple anyway. Why? Because the more businesses that get on board with the idea the better. And that will happen with more than one player in the marketplace.

There's probably more "good" than "bad" from this copying as an end result. Which can't be said about other things.

Can't they at least attempt something original, like a different icon? I'm also surprised they didn't incorporate NFC. I guess its primary usage is still sharing racy videos with your SO. :D

They didn't implement NFC, because Apple does not use NFC. How does Samsung copy Apple when Apple has not done it?

:p

All the frustration from people knowing that Samsung will do it better then Apple. ;)

Below are a selection of features first showcased on Android, before shortly being added to ios.

Notification Center
Apple Maps
Facebook intergration
Launching apps from lock screen
Tabbed browsing
etc etc

All manufactures share ideas. Why everyone thinks Apple is whiter then white is beyond me.

here and there but not over there
It makes me laugh really hard that this doesn't use NFC. I guess they finally realised that it's a useless technology, except for sharing homemade porn.

Isn't that obvious? They have to wait to see how Apple is going to implement and use NFC. If Apple does not do it - than they are not going to do it (due to lack of 'inspiration')

EDIT: oops, jamesnajera was beating me to this (guess it is an obvious answer to this)

Very interesting that Samsung is bringing out their own instead of using Google Wallet. Wonder what Google thinks of that?

I wonder when the sTunes app, the sTunes Store, the sApp Store, and sOS are going to be released? Probably either shortly before or after the start of Samsung's new retail store strategy is outed.

You'd think Samsung would try to be as little like Apple as possible so no one for even a second would question whether they're copying.

I personally love Passbook - travelling more for work and its easy to store my boarding passes as well as my AAdvantage card for a quick trip through to the terminal and to check my miles.

Also use it at Starbucks frequently, am extremely excited for the Texas Rangers to get on the MLB ticket bandwagon (my family has season tickets), and use it for movie tickets as well.

Lots of uses for it - just need more apps to get on board! Personally, I believe loyalty cards stand the most to gain from passbook - specifically ones like BestBuy rewards zone (would show points you have and automatically create a certificate when a certain number of points have been reached).

All-in-all, much better use of mobile payments IMO, for now. Once we get more security on our phones (thumbprint readers perhaps?) and a great NFC enabled APP to store credit cards in (I like the look of passbook, maybe with the added functionality of Google wallet), we can really start thinking about never carrying wallets around!

It makes me laugh when people don't read the full article.

"Samsung says that retailers have so far been reluctant to invest in the additional infrastructure to support NFC payments, making NFC support for Wallet a lower-priority feature."

There one thing Samsung will never be able to copy from Apple: presentation style.

I felt like that presentation was slow, dull and awkward for the audience. No sense of energy unlike Apple.

I can't believe how similar the icon looks too!

I used to be indifferent toward Samsung. i think their products are cheap junk based on ideas stolen from others, but this level of theft hurts all of us who are funding the original, legitimate development of these things. Ah, but something like this needs a lot of background support and Samsung won't be doing that. I bet it gets hacked and used to get into baseball games for free.

Samsung: "Oh crap! Apple released something new that we don't have! Lets release our own version and claim how innovative we are!"

I know every company, Apple included does this. It's apart of the tech industry but Samsung doesn't even try to hide it when they do or honestly even create a new feature for it to make theirs a lot better.

It doesn't use NFC? Wasn't everyone here claiming that Apple HAD to have NFC in their Passbook for it to work yet Samsung now creates this without NFC. Or maybe it is actually because NFC is not nearly as popular as everyone claims it is.

What would Samsung do without Apple ... where would they get the inspiration from? Is there a single Apple design or idea that they didn't clone for cheap? I somehow fail to see where Samsung innovates, something many people claim they do (and no, giant phone screens are not innovation)

This is what would have happened:
1) Google Android would have copied the look and feel of Blackberry and have a Google search as the dominate feature.

2) Microsoft's Mobile phone would have expanded on the Windows CE concept with larger buttons and probably a physical keyboard. It eventually would have been a hit with consumers after a few generations.

3) Samsung would have copied Microsoft

Sharing ideas is one thing, literally doing everything your competitor does (down to copying the style of power adapter plug, packaging, services, etc) is a bit above and beyond. I think most people can see the difference.

EDIT: I don't think Android had Apple Maps :) iOS had the non-Turn-by-Turn Maps (utilizing Google map data) before Android, but Android was certainly first with Google's TbT Maps. There were TbT solutions from other vendors though. Again, some feature copying is likely and I would argue "not bad", but Samsung definitely takes the cake in aping Apple as closely as they can.

Fair enough
Apple Maps
False. Google maps was native on the iPhone for versions 1-5

Facebook intergration
I guess, but that's not really samsung's doing
Launching apps from lock screen
I concede this.
Tabbed browsing
Another one where sure, Android had it first, but really the tabs in Android and iOS are of minimal improvement over hitting a button and seeing all your navigation windows
instead of writing this, list more

That just proves my point further. NFC support for Wallet [is] a lower-priority feature. This means nobody cares, because it's a useless technology most stores don't use, and almost nobody outside the United States uses.

What's the big deal? Try to be a original content provider and let someone just come in and steal it under you so they can make money off your talent. Why would you want to invent and feed your family?

Why not open your home up and let anyone come in and live for free.

Funny thing is there was so much angst when Apple pushed out Passport, not NFC. Now comes the mocking of Samsung pushing out a "me-too" app even though it has NFC in many phones. Of course Apple will probably put NFC in the iPhone soon. It's not like everyone doesn't copy everyone else somehow, someway. (See: Notifications).

Honestly, though the big ground breaking change will come when smart watches have NFC and you can just tap your wrist on the turnstile. The concept of dragging out your phone to do this will seem so silly.
