Thinking about selling the beast...

Just a feeler, but what kind of a price does a system like this command, realistically?

2008 Mac Pro 3,1 2.8GHz Octo
1GB AMD 5870 GPU
12GB of RAM
500GB Hard Drive

It still works wonderfully, but my life has taken a mobile turn and I don't have a need for such a machine any more.

Be honest about price here; I'm still deciding whether I can stomach parting with it!

As a starting point, you can check Mac2Sell, eBay (including completed sales), or Amazon for prices of similar models, to get an idea of what a reasonable price may be. Then adjust the price to account for condition, configuration, remaining AppleCare coverage (if any), etc.

Imho....

between $750-900. Good care of the machine and no cosmetic/functional issues can help in the price.

If selling through an online site, factor in shipping costs/fees

Hi macuserx86. With your specs the price you can sell is around $1100 to $1200. If your Mac Pro is mint, no scratches that helps to bring up the value. Your Radeon 5870 videocard also helps up its value. Shipping may be around $50 to $75 using UPS ground. Prices at eBay tend to be cheaper than Amazon's prices on used Macs. With eBay factor in the 10% deduction from eBay and another 10% by Paypal.

I recently got $1250 for my 3.1, 2.8 octo, 10gb, base video, few older platter drives and a 120 intel ssd.

Took a bit of time, but I knew it would be doable once a wholesaler had emailed wth an offer of $700.

Kinda miss the machine, 5 years later and the quad i7 that replaced it isn't even a major upgrade.

For me it came down to the number of years left where apple would support it on future versions of os x, tax considerations, and power consumption.

I also have a 2008 Octo Mac Pro and still does the job at the end of the day even though this model is old.

Seems like I'll be able to get some money for it, which is nice.

Including the original Nvidia 8800GT as well help the price, no?
There's also a 120GB OCZ Vertex 2 in there that I can keep in.

Well to be fair, you did replace an older top of the line with a newer bottom of the line. Comparing an old 8 core to a new 4 core with a lower clock speed is asking a lot of architecture improvements.

Bottom of the top of the line is more apt if you want to nitpick, which is pretty much par for the course here. Even a base ivy quad i7 is a good jump from i3/i5, which still get face raped by the old mp.

In general I'd agree with your statement. Still, 5 years is an eternity in computers, i.e. moores law.
