Engadget reports that Intel has announced the next generation of Thunderbolt, promising throughput of 20 Gbps in each direction -- twice as fast as the current protocol, allowing simultaneous 4K video file transfer and display

The new generation of Thunderbolt, code-named 'Falcon Ridge', will be backwards compatible with current-generation cables and connectors. Intel expects production to ramp up in 2014.
An on-stage demo with fresh-off-the-press silicon showed the new Thunderbolt running 1,200 [MB/sec], which is certainly a step up from what's currently on the market.

A minor update to Thunderbolt, called 'Redwood Ridge', will be included in some of Intel's upcoming 'Haswell' Core processors.

So we will get faster speeds with no real devices or reasonable pricing products to use it with. Hooray.

So this means Apple can wait until next year to introduce the new MacPro. Of course, USB4 will be announced it 2015, so might want to wait for that. And Intel will have a whole new processor line in 2016, so we best not get ahead of ourselves.

1,200 Mbps, faster than current? Nopes.. 1,200MBps, that would only actually be on par with the 10Gbps promised by the current one. Didn't anandtech push the current TB pretty close to 10Gbps?

I haven't touched my Thunderbolt port once yet. Honestly, what is it there for, other than a monitor?

the new generation mac pro debuts in December, then a refresh happens in January.

Not sure if I don't understand what they mean by "will be backwards compatible with current-generation cables and connectors.", or nobody else does

EDIT: Read it again, I didn't understand. This requires new hardware. I'm an idiot.. :eek:

Well - perhaps not you but I have a RAID attached to it and it's excellent. Nothing on my mac at all apart from apps. All stored off the SDD and RAID protected.

It's good- perhaps for the average user it's a little redundant right now - but for pros - and 4k video will become the norm within 3/4 years it's a good thing.

I wonder if the next MBP will drop USB completely since they currently have 2 TB ports? They could add a 3rd TB port and drop USB completely. :D
