Tough question... My favorite movie (although maybe not the best movie) is The Italian Job (the 2003 remake).

I love that movie :D

However, the best..... I might go for The Shawshank Redemption or if should be a new movie, Django Unchained.

Sydney, Australia.
i posted earlier a few circa 1960 films that had a huge emotional impact on me as a youngster.

I really liked these as an adult.

The Player. -The Robert Altman film starring Tim Robbins.

The Tin Drum. Based on the Gunter Grass novel and a brilliant adaption of a brilliant novel.

The Tin Drum is an excellent choice, and yes, you are absolutely right; it is an exceedingly good and thoughtful adaptation of a brilliant novel.

two of my favorites are

Dead Poets Society (love many Peter Weir movies - Picknick at Hanging Rock, Witness, Fearless, Mosquito Coast...)
Dancer in the Dark (one can argue about Lars von Triers blatantly manipulative ways at times, but I like it)

Picknick at hanging rock? This one lingers on in my amazon basket for quite some time now. Haven't seen any Weir movie up to now, probably should give it a go.

^ The Life Aquatic - I'm right there with you! Can't stand Hans, most hilarious!

Two outstanding movies.

might have to vote shawshank redeption, or pulp fiction.

While these are two very enjoyable and exceptionally well made movies, I'm not sure that they could credibly make a list of the 'Greatest Movie Ever Made' although that, in itself, is bound to be a fairly subjective list.

My #1 favorite movie of all time is Fight Club.

So many different layers to the story. Ah, I've probably seen it over 30 times and each time I pick up on something different.

The by far best movie ever made is of course Tommy Wiseau's "The Room".

I don't know how there could be a doubt in anyones mind.
