Were there any improvements introduced for the Mac mini during the keynote today? It'll be a day or 2 before I can watch it.

This really does make me wonder about the future of the Mac Mini as a product line, or at least one that might get updates annually.

The 2012 Mini was introduced last October. Were you really expecting an update after 8 months?

Actually ....

According to the buyer's guide the typical cycle is 380 days and it has been 230. However 2 of the past 5 updates were 231 and 238 days so a release this week would not be unheard of timing.

once again show me a small form factor pc with a quad core that is more powerful then the 2012 mini 2.3 quad core. once again no company is really pushing apple's 2012 mini. So apple will wait to push out a 2013 mini. If they have one sooner then oct it would be amazing. as for it having the 5000 integrated gpu the answer is no since the new quad core chips have the 4600.

So waiting for the 2013 mini is okay hoping for it to have a quad core with a 5000 gpu section in the next 2 months is a huge longshot.

below is the most likely quad mini chip

it is not a lot better
then this chip

Apple has no need to make a new mini for months they are a bottom line company so they will wait until OCT or later.

as for the base mini not sure what i5 they will use

Is the latest MacMini powerful enough to....

I was thinking of getting a new MacPro but after seeing the beautiful little wonder I am sure it will be WAY more expensive than I can afford. I do not like the iMacs so I was thinking of getting a Mac Mini with 16GB of RAM, the fastest i7 4 core chip and 2 256GB SSD drives.

I do Photoshop CS6 and LightRoom 4 with big files and layers. Sometimes the files are 2+GB in size.

Would this little Mac Mini be powerful enough to handle stuff like this?

Are they reliable.... do they run cool enough to last for 4-5 years?

Thanks

You should be just fine with that setup.

And sorry to say, but the next Mini will not look like the new Pro. The last thing Apple is going to do is give people less reason to go with a Pro over a Mini.

I would love a Mac Mini that could be used as a one-handed bludgeoning weapon.

Seriously though.... if the Mini were put in a tube case like the Mac Pro it would kind of ruin it as an HTPC. The current form factor can be tucked out of the way, mounted on its side, mounted behind your monitor where it can't be seen, and mounted with other minis in a rack case.

If only they could make it just a little bit thinner.

I have a 24" iMac from 2008 and when it dies I'm seriously going to consider a top of the line mini and a TB display. At least if I do that I won't have to chuck out a lovely display just because the rest of the system died.

One good news with 10.9 is that OpenCl 1.2 is activated on HD4000/5000, as Intel put some drivers/api/compiler fort that during may 2013.

Means that some software that required CUDA/OPENCL GPU just to be launch (Resolve, Smoke, Nuke etc.) could be theoretically supported on Mini/MB13/MBA.

You don't use a Mini for massive production with such tools but it is practical to be able to open project, doing some import/export or simple works with it.

And others common software that use GPGPU will take some advantage on it...

The Mac mini doesn't need to do 802.11ac beam forming. They may have to make it a bit bigger ( in width and depth ) to get three wifi antennas in but no way going to need the 4-6 needed for beam forming. It is the wireless access point responsibility to "make up for" the remote weak signal. :) The mini can just broadcast its weak signal (given the distance/wall/whatever between the two. )

I should hope not. I like how the current Mac mini can fit discretely in front of an HDTV.

Guys... You are all wrong. Apple will introduce the Mac nano, which is basically just the logic board from the Macbook Air + MBA's SSD + integrated power supply. It will aprox. the size of 4 iPod classics stacked one upon the others. Technically that's possible. Why shouldn't they do it? They've done it before with the cube and the original Mac mini.
