Hello folks,

I have been real curious about the new kid on the block and followed the sneak peak of the new Mac Pro 2013 with great interest.

I found this depiction of the new PRO which is not shown on Apples webpage. Especially the logo on the front looks neat.
To all graphics and photo shop specialists I have this question: Did Apple provide this pic or is it a fake "label" on the front of the mac in the picture below?

Thanks !

That pic is definitely fake. The case design isn't even right on those.

It's a 3D rendering based on pictures of the new Mac Pro. It looks like they just put that logo on there to make sure people realize that what they are showing is the new Mac Pro. For those that are not in the loop with the look of the new Mac Pro, they would have no idea what that is, hence the fake logo on the front.

I'm pretty sure MacStadium is wrong on the dual cpu option. Probably just copy and pasted and poorly edited from old material.

Looks like they've just done what so many did and seen 12 cores and assumed that has to be dual CPUs because they aren't aware of what is coming out.

Precisely. Though you would have thought they would do their homework on that front. Specs for the new chips weren't exactly top secret.

Exactly. It really does look like a garbage can or an ashtray or even some kind of kitchen appliance. The addition of the label "Computer" would also help.

Precisely? Naw, I can't agree. They're just making sh** up with no regard for what was shown physically or presented orally by Apple at WWDC.

A lot of people here are doing the same thing and did even worse prior to WWDC.

Blogs like that are kind of disgusting IMO and this site should probably change its name from MacRumors to MacSillyWishes.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say. You don't think it's highly probable they just assumed 12 cores were from 2 6-core cpus like the current MP?

I think they're stupid and didn't even trouble themselves a probability check. Just look at their graphics even. I've never seen anything so ridiculous. They're writing fiction. I dunno why they're doing that but it completely disinterests me and eliminates any and all trust I might have as reader.

Hey everybody - a couple readers asked us to jump in and clarify a few things....

1) The images on our website are high resolution 3D renderings based on the specs which apple has released to date. The renderings are to scale, and include all the details which Apple has put forth to date. We tried to make them as accurate as possible. Just like that box of Corn Flakes you eat from every morning, the picture on the box usually isn't of the actual item.

2) The custom rack enclosures which will house the Mac Pro's are being fabricated as I speak, and will be available around the end of July in preparation for whenever Apple releases the servers. This is not fiction. We have allot of experience building this type of infrastructure, and this is nothing new for us.

3) To our knowledge, the servers will not have the Apple Mac Pro logo on the front of them. We put it there in the rendering so that people who may not be 'in the know' will understand that they are computers, and not 'Bazooka Tubes', or something else.

4) Related to the 12 Core CPU question, we are also speculating, but its an educated speculation based on the fact that Intel's website doesn't show a single E5 CPU which is more than 4, 6, or 8 Physical Cores - either available now, or planned anytime soon.

Therefor, if Apple says 12 cores, that would lead us to believe that its 2x 6 Cores just like their existing 12 Core Mac Pro offering.

I hope this clears up some stuff!

Thanks
Jason

Intel don't list future CPUs. The 12-core model is a single CPU.

Will the new Mac Pro even support two CPUs heat wise?

As I've pointed out before, each side of the triangular heat sink is basically a giant vapour chamber (akin to a large flat heat pipe). I'm wondering what this would do if you jammed two CPUs on it, and if it would even work. The fact that they had to design the heat sink like that tells me that a solid block of aluminum (or copper) wasn't enough for even a single CPU.

I'm guessing that the thermal core might not be able to physically support two separate chips. There's just not enough heat dissipation there, especially considering that the same heat sink is shared with two GPUs.

Okay... IMHO, upon further research from 3rd party sources (not Intel directly), it does appear that there is a 12 Core E5 CPU (Ivybridge-EP ?) that should be released as early as Q3 of this year - which would support our estimate of when Apple will release the new Mac Pro's (Oct / Nov).

In other water cooler chatter, it sounds like Intel has been able to get yields up on these high core count E5 CPU's, and they will be therefor releasing them. In particular, this one: E5-2695 v2 running at 2.4Ghz looks like a good candidate.

In any event, we are modifying our site to closer match Apples language of simply stating up to 12 cores, without stating how they are achieving it exactly.

Here are some links:

So nice of you to do your background checks after the article. :) Better late than never I guess...

You should modify those silly renderings as well - or name the firm who intends to manufacture MP6,1 square unintelligent cubby-hole shelves for a tube-shaped Desktop grade computer running Apple Server software.

Next I expect the same company to produce a server rack design comprising 256 iPhones.

No offense, but I don't see how this could already be out for fabrication based purely on the specs we currently have. Also, without the opportunity to test airflow performance. And what about the I/O issues, with all connections/buttons on the side and not front/back? More power to you guys if something like this works and you can do business with it, but it just doesn't seem like a viable solution to me.

This new design is a whole lot different than retrofitting some Mac minis to work in a rack configuration.

These are no doubt custom fabricated racks. If you know what you need you can have anything custom fabbed. You won't be seeing any ads for them in the back pages of Mac World.... Are they still around ?

At any rate MacStadium has been around for several years and if they are currently thriving and expanding (here in the USA!) they have to be doing something right. Have a look at the pics of their Mac Mini racks and Data Center.... They're awesome. They know what their doing....

Hence the questions I posed above. Not saying it cannot be done, but seems a bit dubious given that it's for an unreleased product with minimal known specs. Unless they had some sort of special access to the pre-production version, but that's doubtful seeing as though they didn't even have the right specs listed on their site. Fabrication on this seems a bit premature without having a few units on hand to see if it actually makes sense in the first place.

And I'm sure you can agree coming up with a racking solution for a Mac mini inherently seems a bit easier than a tube not designed for it in the first place. They certainly wouldn't be the first successful company to introduce vaporware to the public. Not saying that's the case. But it's certainly not out of the realm of possibility.
