iOS in the Car 'Very Important' to Apple, 'Part of the Ecosystem'

During the question and answer portion of today's third quarter earnings call,  Apple CEO Tim Cook was asked about iOS in the Car, which was a highlight of the company's keynote presentation at WWDC. Cook said that it was an important "part of the ecosystem," likening it to the App Store, iTunes, messaging, and Siri.

"Having something in the automobile is very important," he said. "It's something people want." He went on to say that Apple could "do it in a unique way better than anyone else," and that it was a "key focus" for the company.

iOS in the Car is designed to provide enhanced iOS integration in automobiles, offering hands-free controls that allow drivers to access maps, get directions, and control music by displaying content on the navigation screen of the car.
iOS in the Car seamlessly integrates your iOS device -- and the iOS experience -- with your in-dash system. If your vehicle is equipped with iOS in the Car, you can connect your iPhone 5 and interact with it using the car's built-in display and controls or Siri Eyes Free. Now you can easily and safely make phone calls, access your music, send and receive messages, get directions, and more. It's all designed to let iPhone focus on what you need, so you can focus on the road.

The feature is expected to be integrated into a number of new cars in 2014, from manufacturers like Honda, Acura, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Infiniti, Ferrari, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Volvo, Opel and Jaguar.

According to settings hidden within iOS 7, iOS in the car may potentially work over AirPlay in addition to USB. iOS in the Car will be officially unveiled later this year alongside the release of iOS 7.

Last year, Apple debuted Siri 'Eyes Free,' which made its first appearance in the Chevy Spark and Sonic cars earlier this year.

What isn't 'Very Important' to Apple ? Everything apple makes is 'Very Important' to Apple.

I like the concept however I'm skeptical as to how well it will work seeing as every time I've got in my car for the last few weeks my ipod has been too hot to use despite being in the shade with the windows open!

It makes sense that your smartphone (what ever platform it may be) should carry all of your multi-media content. It should enable you to talk to whatever device (bluetooth speaker, car, etc) you interact with.

Heck it would be awesome if it could store your driver preferences like seat position and driving modes. I assume that getting every manufacturer to buy into the smartphone maker's rules would take a lot of legwork, but it would be so nice that I can get into any car, and sync up within seconds and just go.

I'd think BMW would be on the list of adopters too since weren't they one of the first manufacturers to have a true iPod connector in their vehicles?

Would like to see them partner with some companies making replaceable head units, too, rather than having to buy a whole new car just to get this sort of thing.

Notably absent is Ford who originally worked with Microsoft for their in-car system and now is trying to do it on their own instead of pairing with iOS. Ford has even been sued for how awful their system is with constant crashes and problems.

Why would you want to buy a new Ford anyway? They're pathetic heaps of s***. NOTHING like the 'old' Ford, like pre-2000.

Well, they are in Britain anyway.

I have been waiting for Apple to innovate in the car space for a long time. Decks look like they are from 1990.

Even the touchscreen ones have awful UI's, and lag horribly and are counter intuitive.

I just hope Apple also makes ones that can be installed into cars already purchased.

I am a Ford guy normally, and have a fairly new Mustang. Ford uses Sync currently with Microsoft, which is not great.

I've had 5 Fords, current is a 2012, and have been very pleased with all of them. Very pleased with Synch and how it integrates with my iPhone too, but it would be nice to see Ford added to this list.

apple says "No." to a lot of product ideas. theyre saying "Yes" to this one, because its very important to apple -- more cars buyers out there than, say, Apple TV users. pushing this in auto makers will help sell more iphones.

im sure they will, but im excited about after-market head units getting in on the game. currently the best things out there are sloppy products like pioneer's App Radio...good idea, poor execution. using apple's new APIs for iOS In The Car should fix that.
