In a new report, App Annie today revealed that downloads from Google Play finally surpassed iOS App Store downloads by 10% during the second quarter of 2013. The uptick in Google Play downloads can be attributed to higher activity in emerging markets, such as Russia, India, and Brazil.

Of course, despite the fact that Google Play garnered more downloads during the quarter, the App Store still earns far more revenue, reinforcing the idea that iOS users are more willing to pay for content than their Android counterparts. The App Store scored 2.3 times the revenue of Google Play.

Games continue to be the number one source of income for both Android and Apple, with gaming apps accounting for more than 80% of revenue in Google Play and 74% of revenue in the iOS App Store. Music and Social Networking apps also experienced an uptick on iOS, driving more revenue to the platform.

The App Store metrics that App Annie uses for its reports come from App Annie Intelligence data, which is designed to offer global app market data to publishers. Revenue estimates include paid downloads and in-app purchases, but not in-app advertising.

Downloads are just now catching up to Apples?
Considering how much bigger android has over apple in marketshare, this is surprising.

That's still very impressive, being that Apple has more market share than Google. Props to you Play Store.

More willing to pay for quality

I have both Android and iDevices and I have to say that I usually don't bother with Android apps unless they are from Google and/or some app that is common to all platforms. There is a dearth of quality apps on Android, which is the primary reason why people are not willing to pay for Android content.

On the other hand I am more then willing to pay $0.99 for an iDevice app, even something just to try out as generally speaking I have had more satisfaction with iTunes apps then Play apps.

I think it just makes sense that as there are more Android devices out there eventually the download numbers will skew in their direction, I mean, there have always been more Windows Apps then Mac Apps, but honestly I think Google needs to so something "significant" to improve the quality of development on the Android platform, like maybe come out with their own dev environment and language.

Not surprised.

The App Store has lost many exclusive apps (Instagram, Flipboard, Vine) to name a couple.

That with more free to play apps flooding the market.

I wonder what the numbers would look like if the things that aren't actually really apps were included (e.g. themes).

Not saying it would make much of a difference one way or the other, but it would be interesting to see how much it did skew the numbers (if at all).

Not that this is directly related but with the let down of ios 7, mostly paint (ugly paint at that) and little functional improvements android is becoming more and more intriguing for ios users to jump ship.

The play store is definitely catching up in content especially usefull content. There are a lot of garbage apps on both platfroms.

Not surprising. There has been a huge exodus to android over the last few years. An increasing user-base attracts more devs, thus more apps.

I had a few apps on Google Play last year and what an awful experience. Because they have a 100% refund policy for the first 2 hours after you buy an App (it might have changed but used to be a full 24 hours) I had 70% of my sales refunded to people, they would buy my app, watch the videos and look at the photos and then return it for a full refund. Ugh!

Theme's should count as much as any app IMHO. Some people use and appreciate themes more than many of there apps. Besides has allowed some theme type apps. They are more like glorified wallpapers but what can you expect when Apple locks down everything. :p

ugh wow, that's just awful. sorry to hear about that.

people with the mindset getting free apps with android or any other platform will goes to show that free apps rules, not so much with the revenue.
developers gotta pay the bills right

When did Google buy MacRumors? Where's the story about Google essentially lying about N7 outselling iPads in Japan or Samsung cheating on benchmarks? And this constant bashing of Apple maps on MR is getting old.
