Apple Planning New R&D Facility in Taiwan?

According to VR-Zone Chinese [Google Translation] (via BGR) Apple is currently recruiting a development team in Taiwan, in order to establish a new research and development facility.

The Taiwan R&D center will supposedly focus its efforts on future iPhones, but may also work on other future products as well. Apple is said to be hiring for numerous positions at the facility, with a number of different engineering and managerial jobs available. There do not appear to be any new R&D job listings for Taiwan on the Apple site, so it appears that the hiring push for the facility has yet to begin.

A Taiwanese development center makes sense, as it is where Apple partner Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is located. TSMC recently signed a deal with Apple that will see the company producing A-series chips for future Apple devices beginning in 2014.

Apple operates a number of other research and development facilities around the world and is currently planning to open another center in Shanghai this summer.

Diversity of skill and backgrounds will help develop better products. Sometimes ideas outside of the U.S.A. are good too you know.

Yep, I'm sure we'll see a Taiwanese influence in the next iPhone. :rolleyes: Seriously, Apple bragged about bringing jobs back to the US with the Mac Pro; this seems to contradict that goal.

Google just announced that they were already planning to build two new R&D facilities in Taiwan.

If the US government, particularly this administration, keeps banging on the door of profitable US companies with one hand out and a cattle prod in the other? Yes.

Having....

TMSC there and continental China around the corner (bigger market and bigger assembly place), would make sense to have a R and D facility near. Chinese and Japanese technicians are very noted for their prowess....and being cynical, can cost a loss there than in the USA....

R&D best occurs where your engineers are. If they are doing all the engineering in Taiwan, then they need to have R&D facilities there. It's not like Apple isn't building that massive mothership out in California.

So why is Samsung able to open a semiconductor plant in Texas? A foreign company comes to the US where labor is a lot more expensive than in Taiwan, China, etc....

Analysts have no clue.

Probably will not be a full R&D center.
Apple designs systems here in the US.

Center will probably focus on supply chain management, management of the partners and prototype evaluation.

That makes sense.

Moving a portion of your team across the globe for development, makes no sense. 12 or so hours away means you never have a good time for meetings with the people on the other side of the globe. You also never get answers to questions quickly because you rarely work at the same time.

If you want to delay a project, try two teams separated by 12 hours.

China is where the $ is. Additionally, having Chinese engineers working on future phone models that cater to specific users' habits and tasted makes sense. Wr may not see such phones elsewhere only need to seize market share there to be a fat cat. Maps and Facetime can be a deciding factor because internet is quite cheap and ubiquitous there.
Kudos to Apple.

Phase I [xxxxxxxxx=] Offshore blue collar jobs out of the US (90% Complete)
Phase II [xx========] Offshore white collar jobs out of the US (20% complete)

Phase III [x=========] Offshore engineering jobs out of the US (10% Complete)

Profit!


Simple, Wage arbitrage. We want to offshore as may jobs out of the US and replace them with McJobs, insure the Federal government continues to provide any required aid (food stamps etc..) and insure people have access to credit so they can borrow the difference to make up for the spread between the cost of living and mcjob wages.
