Best iMovie Alternative

Final Cut Pro.

Just another option to look at Adobe Premiere Elements 11.

i had the same thoights.. i upgraded to fincal cut pro x about 6 months ago...

really enjoy using it now... so much better than imovie...

the price put me off a bit, but looking back, i think it's justified by the speed of my workflows and also the quality of output...

i saved up for a few months and i also had an iTunes gift card donated to me too...

Do you mean being able to edit multiple video streams? ScreenFlow and VideoFlow can both do this, even thought they're both presented as screen casting apps. I've used both and come to prefer VF - which is only £10.49 in the MAS. They also work well with IMovie if you don't mind exporting and importing.

You may want to check out Premiere Elements Quick Editor, which is like an uber-light version of Premiere (even more basic than Premiere Elements), but for some people it's more understndable and capable than iMovie. It's 30 bucks at the App Store:

I have been tempted by this alternative, the price is not bad at all and I actually just went for it and bought it, downloading as we speak.

Don't bother. It's slow, unstable, it crashed on me either at startup or often shortly thereafter, it's cluttered and it doesn't even have features such as the 10.7/10.8 full screen mode. The full Premiere may be good for professional work, but there's nothing to this light version to make it a compelling alternative to iMovie, in my book at least.
I shared my frustration with Apple and their customer service was kind enough to cancel my purchase and give me a refund. Awesome

I've been hoping for a supported version of iMovie similar to how pixelmator is a slimmed down version of photoshop.

iMovies is to Final Cut Pro as Pixelmator is to Photoshop. But it sounds like you want something more along the lines of "draw" level for movies. I guess there is some cheap editor out there, but like draw, it will be quite limited as to what it can do.

I guess there are no rumors about a new iMovie or for that matter iPhoto

You can do a side by side and picture-in-picture in iMovie.

You have to turn on the Advanced Tools in iMovie Prefs.

I see no advanced settings in the imovie that came with Mavericks.

It looks like almost like the ios7 imovie the way its overly simplified.

Have they reduced the number of advanced editing options or are the just integrated in a different way?
