I use PSPware, drop in your video and Poof! presized and formatted.

My issue is that I have a large library of legally purchased DVDs and want to be able to view them on my PSP.

I've tried a number of software applications for the PSP including PSPware.

Fisrt I have to RIP the DVDs to get VOB files. Not that big a deal. I use MacTheRipper and it works just fine. I can view these files in the Quicktime Player without any issues.

However when I use software such as PSPware to format the movie for the PSP, I loose audio/video sync. After the first chapter the audio lags the video by approximately 30 seconds.

I still haven't found a reliable way to view my existing DVD library on my PSP. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be happy to hear them.

So I agree with Apple. Until they can provide a simple and legal way for me to view my exisitng DVD library on a portable device, there really isn't much point in making a video iPod.

I may be in the minority so please don't flame me if you disagree. Also note that I do own a Canon XL1 and could make and view my own videos on the PSP but that's not really what I want it for. I want to view my extensive DVD library on it.

I don't understand why would someone buy 80gb iPod just to carry music and photos? Cmon guys, who are you, photographer of National Geographic?!? My 5 year worth music archive is hardly 35gbs, plus 5-6gbs of photo, and thats it.. I'm really curious to see who has 80gb of music here?

So what I am saying is, if not video capable there is no logical reason to raise the bar to 80gbs for iPod. But if it's gonna be showing videos on-the-go, then I could carry some divxs and stuff, and then 80gbs iPod is meaningful..

I have to agree that there would be a seemingly much smaller market for an 80GB iPod. My iTunes music collection is roughly 1900 songs, a little over 16GB (mostly stored as 256kbps AAC)... so I certainly wouldn't have the need for an 80-gig iPod.

Use Handbrake to rip the DVD to .mp4 format (you can even use H.264) it takes hours and hours but the quality is superb.

Speed bumps to the PowerBooks, Powermacs and a 80gb drive in the iPod, requires a whole media event?

I think not.........................

gotta be something more than that.
Perhaps they are eliminating the Powerbook ... combining it with the iPod ... and introducing the new PowerPod. High speed wireless WiMax internet, 1,000,000+ songs in your pocket (new compression format ... AAC compact plus enhanced ultra), HD video capable 3" screen, voice activated, no keyboard, mouse, click or scroll wheel required, 4.5 GHz processor, plutonium design case, 200GB micromemory, still fits in your pocket (albeit not your watch pocket), and all for about $299. Comes with optional Red Velvet PowerPod Cloak. Then EVERYONE will be satisfied ... at least until after the announcement is done. :D

The 80GB iPod is useful for a few types of users:
  1. People with a large music library. (Yes there are lots of people who own over a thousand music CDs.)
  2. People with a large photo library they want to carry around/
  3. People carrying files around on the iPod. (Or using it to back up some data. But I hope that is not their only backup.)

I really really hope for new Powerbooks. Lets keep our fingers crossed.

What computer are you on at the moment? I'm on a Rev C Powerbook but I'm thinking if these updates are any good, I might shift to the last PPC based Powerbook and hold out until Rev B/C Intel Macs.

My Prediction

I am going to say it 'cause I don't think that anyone else has...

I am going to predict a form change to the Powerbook. It will include a complete redesign to the case, a new HD Screen.

OK... (Now that everyone is saying no way!!!! Why did all the invites go out to iLounge etc etc!!!!) Well here's the thing... I think that it could have a dock built in... it could even have nano dock built in a la PCMCIA card slot. (Obviously with a rubber surround so you don't scratch your nano!) Much like has been previously mentioned on Macrumors on one of the million other threads about powerbooks!

So now your powerbook will be the hub of all your entertainment (AKA Media Centre! brrrrrr!) Hence the curtains on the invites and the invites going out to iPod rumourmill websites...

Either that or they are going to release the iPod Movie (So prefer that name than the Video iPod!) that is so not how we are imagining it our minds.

Oh sod it! POWERBOOK G5 NEXT TUESDAY! WOOOO HOOOO! :p

You know something... I don't care about them doing a big announcement. I just wish they would announce the PowerMac upgrades already.

Saying Rev C means very little without more context.

is it 12", 15" or 17"? and if it's a 15", is it titanium or aluminum?

For Aluminum PowerBooks, the 12" and 17" have one more generation than the 15" Powerbook.

Reasons to raise the iPod to 80 GB

There are reasons to raise the iPod to 80 GB that don't have to relate to video.

* Demand is small for high-capacity players, but it's there. SOME people want them. SOME people have more than 60 GB of music.

* Others want the portable HD space. In addition to my music and photo libraries (neither is huge), I boot Mac OS X off my iPod, and run all my apps from it, and store all my projects on it. That way any Mac I walk up to is MY Mac with MY settings, able to do MY work. I just boot it off the iPod. Great when I visit family (they have a Mac) and don't want to lug my PowerBook.

* The clincher: 80 GB drives may not COST Apple any more than 60s. It often happens with HD space that the cram in more GB for the same cost--or even discontinue making the lower-GB version.

THE REAL ONE THING

Let's get this cleared up. I have the news you have all been waiting for. Since I'm not under any stupid Apple NDA I can talk.

Apple Insider and Think Secret are all wrong. I can confirm 100% for you.

1.There is NO and I can confirm NO Powerbook or Powermac updates.
2.There is NO iPod video OR 5G iPod appearing.
3.No Airport express with video out.

The product is the unveiling of Apple's new internet tablet (whatever they call it I don't know). While us developers at Nokia have been hard at work on the 770 we have as developers seen Apple's device from their developers. Nokia has officially delayed our product the 770 to see the final offering from Apple and to make adjustments if need be. (i.e boost our performance with more ram on shipping so I am told and finish the touches on our software to support the bluetooth keyboard officially)

The Apple device itself will sport a 800x600 screen size (similar to ours) and will contain WIFI. It will have bluetooth to work with their cordless bluetooth keyboard and mouse (one up on our 770 internet tablet the mouse that is). The OS is a VERY stripped down version of OSX. Safari,Mail,iCal,iTunes, and iChat. These will be like widgets which is a good idea kinda like our hildon widgets.

It is a very good screen (same screen?). It is also a touch screen. It is not very big in size. It has NO HARDDRIVE but uses NAND flash memory. I think 512mb built in or other.

It has its own dock and lasts up to 4 hours on a charge. In comparison our 770 lasts 3. But Apple is known for overstating battery life.

We at Nokia await to see the new product. Apple will help us to make the internet tablet popular and sell in Europe with Nokia's offering.

Sorry, but the curtains say it ALL...ONLY the vidPod and the iTMS Movie Store...NOTHING ELSE (apart from some video-out hub or TiVO-like device)...alas, only video-related stuff...crap!

Pfft, not PCI-e, not worth my time.

I've been waiting 5 years for a good update to the PowerBook but there never seems to be one. Everytime they update them I come on here to see if they're good or not and from what people are saying, they aren't - so the wait goes on and I plug away on my 5300.

Is everyone still forgetting the damn red movie curtain and no updates to the videos on iTunes? There has to be something movie related or video related whether it's an iPod, or some new feature or something on the iTunes store. And the invite indicates it's something special you would think, he never says that catch phrase unless he's showing something to wow you.
As I have posted on other threads --- I have a feeling the curtin is important --- there have been rumors for a few years in home theather mags and other places that Apple is working on a set top/tv tuner/mac-mini/home theather/projector/etc. device --- maybe this "one more thing" is video something but not ipod

Just The Facts Ma'm.Just The Facts

NOT in chronological order

Apple has been gobbling up 10,000 Sq.Ft. of floor space in Cupertino recently.
New video capable chips have been shipping to Apple
The last invitation was a pocket on jeans with the words "1000 songs, here we go again."
The new invite says "One More Thing" and it's for the media thus generating a LOT of speculation
Jobs said no cheap Mac then shows us the Mini.
Jobs says iPod video isn't ready for prime time
Jobs says "it's true. We're switching to Intel" 2006 first the low-end Macs,2007 the Pro line.
Apple asks Intel for some of it's chips early.Do they get them? WHY do they want them early?

If I've left anything out I'm sure you will tell me!

discuss :D

I know someone who has tens of thousands legal songs (he's a DJ) on multiple drives, I would probably have 10,000-20,000 myself if I converted all of my CDs to MP3 or AAC formats, but I do it only as I want them. I do agree, though, that I can't possibly imagine anyone who could possibly want, or need, anywhere near that many songs "in their pocket" at any one time. As for 25,000+ photos ... even a photographer might have a hard time with it. How do you sort through 25,000+ 2-3" photos ... in thumbnail format 25 up? You'd still have a thousand screens to go through ... and 2" photos become .4" photos. (Please forgive my ignorance if I am unaware of how the iPod photos work, but I have not seen one live.)

But hey, why not. If the capability is out there, why not sell it to everyone who will never use it. Keeps making Apple money so they can keep making updated Powerbooks and PowerMacs. Oh wait, nevermind, they apparently forgot how to do that. Sorry, had a bad dream.

When has this EVER been a HUUUUUUUUUGE event? It's only been blown WAY out of proportion cuz of all the vPod Madness. It's a big event because it probably *will* be the last great PPC update for pb's and maybe pm's. That's certainly enough, in my opinion, to make it sorta hoohaa.

Yeah but everyone thought the Music Event was just gonna be the phone, not many expected the Nano part from a small page 2 item on Mac Rumors.

There is gonna be summat else.
Or maybe They will dissappoint us, maybe they want to get rid of their reputation for wowing us and ease the pressure they get from press speculation.

I might be there with you if my 5300ce case hadn't cracked, screen came apart, etc. Took a year to get that one resolved. Still presently content with my 500MHz Titanium, and I work in an industry where much more would be much better. Oh well, till I see something I really like (don't like the aluminum books), I'll just plug along (and use the more powerful computers at work). ;)
