Sweet. I hope that isn't fake. I never expected apple to get
involved with the PDA business after that comment about how
the PDA market was a dying market and such. The iApp will be
something dumb that is a port for synching your PDA, for inputing
stuff into the PDA, and for customizing the PDA. I am hoping we
will see an office application from apple. An office application by
apple is way overdue.

Well Apple also said that there wouldn't be a DVD burner in the next Powerbooks and here it is.

I guess that is true. But it just seems like the PDA market and the
cell phone markets are merging, and if apple is to make a PDA
it should be very 'phone-ish'. That way people who are looking
for an ultra cool phone can get it, and people who are looking for
an ultra-cool PDA can get it. I don't think it would be the best
move for apple to make, but don't mind...

There's nothing here that says that it can't be a phone.

Apple also said as soon as they could get a superdrive in the powerbooks they would.

I expect the markets would really hammer Apple's share price if they produced a PDA.

I know, I am just saying that if it isn't a phone and a PDA then
apple will suffer big losses.

I think by entering the crowded MP3 player market with the iPod and being extremely succesful Apple has already proven they know how to handle these things.

Not really. The MP3 player market and the PDA market are completely different.

For one the MP3 market has shipments of over 20 times more than the PDA market and is also growing significantly each year. Even despite Apple's success they are yet to break 10% of that market too.

The PDA market is decreasing in size and is fading into obscurity as other items take over its major funtions. It has very little in the way of a roadmap into the future or expectation for growth. It lacks any truly killer funtionality to get it accepted by consumers and it really doesn't face the rosiest of futures. Apple would be really silly to go after the PDA market specifically and I believe Steve Jobs is well aware of that fact and knows exactly how to handle it, stay away.

PDA's here to stay...

The only reason the PDA market languishes is because the PDA's on the market suck. People want and will pay for a PDA that provides great power and functionality. And BTW, have you noticed that most of the PC Manufacturers are still working hard to get INTO the PDA market?

The mantra that Apple will never get back into the PDA market is tired; of course, they will. They remain on the sidelines of this market to their own detriment.

@telomar-

I think the only real thing holding back the ipod from dominating the MP3 player market is the price tag. When the average joe looks at a 500 buck ipod, then looks at one of those tiny flash memory players that are 100 bucks, he will choose the cheap one.

I agree what you say about the pda market, its crowded, and has no direction. Knowing apple, it could be possible for them to redefine that new direction.

Features of a pda and a phone in a tablet pc?

If you want to make a PDA that will sell like hotcakes, then make one with a color screen that is big enough to read at arm's length, and have an always-on internet connection that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to have. When this is possible, you will see PDAs hit it. You could have a PDA that you can check phone listings on the road, get maps on the fly, check stock prices, get the weather while traveling, manage your account without carrying receipts everywhere, get live sports scores, read internet articles, and everything else that you have to lug a computer around for. PDAs don't need to have full-fledged word processors or spread-sheets to make it big. People will still do those things on their computers.

Yes, I know that there are programs on cards that will give you phone numbers and ,aps, etc., but they are not "live". you have to get new programs every now and again, and I can't get news from the cards.

I truly believe that true internet service on a nice screen will bring people to the PDA market. I don't like surfing on my phone because you can't read the dang thing like a real article, and you have to have it in your face.

I don't know, it's just me, but I will wait until everything I said above is possible. Of course, I was one of the ones that was hoping the iWalk was for real too (minus that ugly scroll wheel n the front of it, of course).

My 2¢

Hmm... I call BS. My gut intuition is that the same person wrote both sides of that conversation, and it just doesn't ring true.

Besides, it's another damned PDA rumor thread. Weren't we shooting people who started those at one point?

Maybe he is the one who made the iWalk video.;)

That conversation does seem a little fake, but it is impossible
to tell.

Telomar explained why apple shouldn't make a PDA almost
perfectly. If you haven't read his 'argument' then read it now.

I really wish people would NOT post chat transcripts...

... instead, they should abstract them into something resembling cogent English. It would be a plus if they would try to spell correctly, too.

Who cares it's a rumor just as any other rumor. No shred of evidence you just have to take the persons word for it. A lot of the rumors that get held up as fact on the front page of major rumor sites come from posts just as this.

If it were on the front page here at MacRumors you would believe it wouldn't you.
