I have it turned on on my Macbook Pro running Mountain Lion

I have it turned on on my iPhone 5s running iOS 7

But they won't see each other.

Airdrop is not currently compatible between OS X and iOS.

Mavericks is a future version of OSX.

Anyhow, despite their names being the same, they are different things and are platform dependent. And to be fair a bit, Apple has never advertised airplay working in the way that the OP wants it too. It is confusing though.
