iOS 7 adoption continues to grow, with Apple seeing the operating system on 87 percent of devices connected to the App Store, according to Apple's App Store developer support page. The numbers come seven months after the operating system's original release and two months ahead of the expected preview of iOS 8 at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in two month's time.

Apple has traditionally seen speedy adoption of its new iOS releases because it makes it easy for customers to upgrade to the new operating system without too much trouble, and it's likely that iOS 8 will see similar adoption after its expected release this fall.

iOS 8 is expected to include upgrades to Apple's Maps app, including possible support for public transit directions and enhanced points of interest, a Healthbook app that assists users in aggregating personal health data like blood pressure, heart rate, and more -- perhaps in concert with a smart watch product -- as well as improvements to Siri and iTunes Radio, two of the more recent additions to Apple's mobile operating system.

In contrast to Apple, Google sees only 5.3% of its users running the latest version of its Android operating system, version 4.4 or KitKat, which came out in October 2013 -- a month after iOS 7 was released.

The increasing adoption rate of iOS 7 has also led to a drop in iOS 6 usage, with the older operating system now installed on just 11 percent of devices. 2 percent of devices are using older versions of iOS. In early December, iOS 7 usage was at 74 percent, jumping to 78 percent later in December, 80 percent in late January and 85 percent towards the end of March.

Apple's data, which comes directly from the App Store, represents concrete iOS 7 adoption information for developers.

That's just amazing. I expect it to hit 90% in the coming weeks.

At WWDC last year Apple said iOS 6 adoption was 93%. iOS 7 has basically 2 months to surpass that. According to 9to5Mac a top priority at Apple right now is a redesign of OSX.

OS X 10.10 will be the successor to the current OS X, 10.9 Mavericks. Mavericks focused on power-user features and under-the-hood enhancements to improve hardware performance, battery life, and graphics processing. 10.10, however, will focus on aesthetics. According to sources, Apple Senior VP of Design Jony Ive is leading a "significant" design overhaul for OS X, and the new design will be the operating system’s cornerstone new feature (none of the mockups online, like the one above, are a good indicator of what to expect).

The new design will not be as stark as iOS 7, but it will include many of the flat elements and white textures instead of re-creations of life-like elements. The end-to-end redesign is said to be a top priority at Apple right now, with the specific details about the changes being sworn to extreme secrecy. Apple has been testing new features such as Siri and support for iOS AirDrop compatibility, but it’s unconfirmed if those enhancements will be ready for 10.10. We’ll have more on what to expect from OS X 10.10 soon, so stay tuned.

So adoption numbers for iOS somehow imply or even really relate to how good it is?

At an 87% adoption rate with only a vocal minority complaining on forums, it's safe to say that it's pretty good.

It certainly did with another OS: Windows Vista (and 8 to a lesser extent). I will grant that iOS makes it very, very easy to upgrade and all-but-impossible to downgrade.

Not really. When a huge number of people upgrade just because an upgrade is available and have no way to downgrade if they don't like it, when a large number of people getting new devices automatically get the new version without a way to select an older one if they wanted it, when a large number of people are just regular folks who don't even know about internet forums let alone have the time to figure them out and post on them...no, you can't really just make a supposition like that simply based on the number of people with the latest version of iOS.

This helps make developers lives easier. Don't have to support nearly as much legacy code when your install base stays up to date. Apple just needs to build out more and more freedom for developers so that their or less and less limitation on what they can do.

The interapp communication rumors are exciting if they turn out to be true.

So much for being a fail... eat that haters.

I wonder what the numbers would be like if apple hadn't blocked you from downgrading to iOS 6. I know at least 4 people who asked me how to do it (you pretty much cannot).

That being said, iOS 7.1 is a big advancement. Hopefully iOS 8 will be even better.

EDIT: 5 seconds after tapping "Submit", Safari crashed. Add that to the 6-7 hard reboots a day and you see where I am.

Uhh yes. They do relate to how good it is. People wouldn't upgrade if it sucked.
Well, not really, that's the point. I think it can easily be argued that most upgrade just to upgrade and because an upgrade just shows up on their phone and those with new devices automatically get it without any choice in the matter. So, again, no, not really.

Having jumped ship from iOS 7 to Android back in November, I do find it ridiculous how long Android phones can take to receive updates to the latest software.

My network (Three) still hasn't approved a Kit Kat update for the Galaxy S4.

Almost half a year!!

By that logic, since Windows 8 is selling better than Windows 7 did, does that mean more people like Windows 8 too?

Seriously, that's terrible logic.

Windows 8 us far far better than Windows 7, there's just a whole bunch of people out there who are completely computer illiterate or completely hysterical because they don't want Windows to become more Mac-like.

Except for the fact that Microsoft themselves essentially admitted they kind of screwed up with Windows 8 when it comes to desktop computers and are actively working on fixing up their screw up with various changes like those coming with Windows 8.1. That said, this is all kind of unrelated to iOS and the article anyway.

Metro sucks. If you disable it and use a start menu program to recreate it windows 8 really is solid, fast, and stable.
