Survey Shows Strong Consumer Interest in Larger-Screen iPhone 6

Research firm ChangeWave (via Fortune) has released the results of a new survey, showing that interest among early-adopter and professional consumers in a larger-screen iPhone 6 is at an all time high.

40% of respondents indicated they are 'very likely' or 'somewhat likely' to buy an iPhone 6 that is described as having a "larger screen size" and a "faster processor" along with an "updated iOS operating system" at a starting price of $199 with a two year contract.

“This is the highest level of demand for an unannounced Apple model in a ChangeWave survey - stronger than we’ve seen in previous years for the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5 models prior to their announcements,” said Andy Golub of 451 Research. “Speculation over a larger screen iPhone is clearly striking a chord with consumers.”

Internal memos from the second ongoing trial between Apple and Samsung indicate that Apple is eager to release a larger phone, as a slide deck from an April 2013 presentation showed that customers want less expensive and notably, larger screen smartphones.

Apple will likely unveil its next-generation iPhone later this year, as it has done with previous models. Unlike past iterations however, the iPhone 6 may come in two versions, including one with a 4.7-inch screen and another with a larger 5.5-inch screen that will be released later.

In addition to a larger display, the iPhone 6 is expected to feature a narrower bezel that surrounds a thinner design along with a faster A8 processor and an upgraded camera. According to a research note from well-sourced KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the high-end models of the iPhone 6 may also feature a durable, sapphire display as Apple is expected to become temporarily limited by the low supply yields of the material.

I think the market for the Note 3 and other larger phones shows consumers like choices and a larger phone does strike the chord with some people.

Apple would be remiss to exclude this segment of consumers, so hopefully we'll see a larger iPhone in the near future.

Apple is not obliged to sell any thing it doesn't feel like selling.

I think there is a flaw in this study (or I am not understanding it) ...

But the study does not ask about the preference of a bigger screen - it asks about interest in upgrading to the next iPhone.

I personally, if I have for the next generation phone the choice of current screen size or bigger screen size (with otherwise identical spec) I will go with the current screen size - but if the only option to get the next gen iPhone (with better processor, new iOS, .... etc) is to have the bigger screen, than I would go with the new iPhone 6 since I don't have the option of current screen size.

Apple should go ahead and do the bigger phones (and if it is only to keep the complainers quite) - but at least give me the choice of current size, bigger size and if it has to be 'almost tablet' size.

I'd rather like a tiny iPhone mini. With just iCal, Contacts, Mail, Music Player, Messages and phone capabilities.

Since I sit in front of a computer the whole day long I don't see why I need apps.
And when I'm abroad, I can't use any app like google maps because roaming prices are ridiculous. So I still ask people on the street for directions while having a fancy iphone in my pocket doing nothing.

You know, I'm hoping the same - I find it interesting that the iPhone 5s marked the first time an 's' upgrade didn't get a storage boost, and I know a lot of people (myself included) that would gladly rock a 128GB iPhone. Hell, I know people that are getting tired of the 16GB iPhone! While flash memory hasn't exactly hit rock bottom, I know Apple realizes it isn't as expensive to the point where it's much of a struggle. I say bring on the 128GB iPhone 6!

Count me in but I would not go for the biggest size either the current size or the 4.7 all depends on how easy the bigger phones are to carry. I don't want a brick in my pocket.

I would like to have a bigger screen or at least a new redesign phone I feel like I have been around with same phone for like years.. Gets boring at some point. We'll that's my opinion. Also why not to have differents sizes for differents tastes?

This is an honest question with no sarcastic undertones whatsoever, but can someone tell me exactly why one-handed use is a desired feature?

I have a Nexus 5 with a 5" screen and honestly don't ever find myself saying: Damn, I wish I could use this with one hand instead of two.

ok, but

wouldn't mind a bigger screen but I hope they keep the bulk down and maintain the flat sides so I can still stand it up on a surface

also I have been typing on the iPhone since the first one came out, a bigger keyboard is going to really slow me down because currently I can type really fast without even looking

not really an answer to your question but I agree with you. I barely use my iPhone with one hand especially while I am typing. It is more convenient to me to use both thumbs. again those are ones own preferences of course, thats why its good to have choices

- convenience
- using it while smoking
- using it while doing other things with the other hand
- watching porn
- while driving :-(

well, I think it is mostly personal preference and thats while people should have the choice that fits their needs. Don't force a small phone on every one, don't force a big phone on every one - give them the choice to match their need. I personally use my phone always with one hand and it fits in all my pockets, no matter who small without bother me or 'feeling' it.

Correct, and Apple also stated at one point phones don't need multitasking and Steve Jobs saw no interest in apps on the newly released iPhone.

So just because apple decided against it before doesn't make them right. They smartly changed course to the betterment of the iphone.

Indeed, this is skewed to a "do you want the new phone or the existing one?" question.

Similarly I'd hope they give the option for the flagship device to have the existing screen size - or at least to not be any larger than the existing 5S with a case.

Questions come to mind:

If Apple releases a larger screen, will they discontinue the current 4.0 inch screen iPhone?

If the 4.0 screen is continued, will it be hobbled or decontented? Will I have to buy the larger screen to get the most storage or best construction materials?

I hope neither is the case.

I live in a metro area where I'm taking city transit on a daily basis. I need one hand to hang on so I don't go flying. One handed use is convenient for walking too.

I'm certainly interested in seeing what the potential 4.7" iPhone6 may look like, but I had a 5" Galaxy S4 for work and I hated how big it was. Loved that I could fit my iPhone in my pocket.

If you didn't have a phone that required both hands to use you probably wouldn't ask the question. I have a 5s, but the overall physical size of the 4s was my favorite. I've had an iPhone since the original and like the ability to write, eat, drink, shuffle docs, etc. while using touchscreen. Have never dropped an iPhone. Every time there's a discussion of Samsung's plasticky phones, someone posts how great it is because they've "dropped it a dozen times without it breaking". That's what happens when you try to use an oversized phone with one hand. No thanks. Like minor head concussions, the damage is cumulative.

I wouldn't worry about it too much...
I think they showed their hand with their iPad mini strategy. I thought that the 2nd gen mini would be lesser specced than the Air, to create differentiation. Turns out.. Apple wanted size to be the ONLY differentiator. I couldn't be more pleased w/ them over that decision!! =)
I expect the same from phones if they end up doing 2 sizes.
