Hi, i was simply trying to check for any software updates and I got this error message. I've never seen it before.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

OSX app store hacked?

I'm getting an error when I hit the updates button, sometimes need to push it multiple times.

An Error has occurred

The certificate for this server is invalid. You might be
connecting to a server that is pretending to be
"swscan.apple.com" which could put you
confidential information at risk.

Anyone else?

Mac rumors has a tip link on the front page of the desktop version. It's on the top left under the words Mac blog.

I get this message as well : The certificate for this server is invalid. You might be connecting to a server that is pretending to be “swscan.apple.com” which could put your confidential information at risk.

It appears just today, Sunday 25 May 2014. tried re-installed from Combo (10.9.3)- but after installation - the same error.

I'm not seeing that error here on 10.9.3. Must be a regional thing?

I am in Bulgaria, EU and the App store does not work. Just a note - I am a participant in the apple beta seed program. I do not know if this is related to the issue

I'm in U.S.A. and not a part of the developer seed program and I still get the error, for what its worth.

--Edit--

I just switched from standard DNS servers for my ISP to Google's DNS servers and the error went away.

I switched to Google 8.8.8.8 DNS - but the same error

The problem is that someone at Apple has allowed the security certificate for swscan.apple.com (the Apple update server) to expire.
It's not something easily fixed on the user side.

But how it can be expired for some users only....

CDNs point the server to different actual servers, so not everyone may be pointing to the same server even though it appears they are. Also if a user is pointed to a private software update server, that user's computer will not be affected.
