Following our report from earlier today, Apple has launched its new entry-level 16 GB fifth-generation iPod touch, while also cutting the price on the current 32/64 GB iPod touch, offering them for $249 and $299, respectively. The new iPod touch is available in six different colors with a rear camera and a lower price tag of $199.

The 16 GB model now offers the same features as the larger capacity models, although the Loop wrist strap is sold separately on the 16 GB model and included with 32 and 64 GB models.

The fifth-generation iPod touch originally debuted in October of 2012 with a $299 price tag, but Apple expanded the lineup with a lower-cost, silver-only 16GB model that shipped without a rear camera and lower price point of $229. This new $199 16GB model replaces the $229 model in Apple's iPod touch lineup.

Update: Apple has issued a press release announcing the update.

We took the same two-year-old iPod and decided to sell it at a lower price—a price redesigned from the ground up.

Hopefully this sets a precedent whereby storage doubling is $50, and not $100 (which is obscene, frankly).

I'm only seeing this on the US online store so far. Every other country I checked shows the old 16 GB model as "unavailable" and appears to have the old pricing for the 32 GB and 64 GB models.

Usually the online store would go down while the distributed network of servers got updated, then everyone would see the new pricing for each country. Has Apple changed the way they update the online store?

Does this mean they will be sticking with the A5 iPod touch for a some time or do you think they are trying to clean house and will be giving it a faster chip later on?

Also if you stop by the refurbished store, the prices dropped there as well. $149 for the 16 GB model (without camera), $199 for 32 GB and $239 for 64 GB.

Larger iPod touch soon?

They might be prepping for a larger screened iPod touch to start at $299 for 32GB in the fall, that's why there is a price adjustment.

So far this feels like a promotion to get rid of old stock, before new models get introduced in September/October.

iOS 8 will support models with A5 processors (iPhone 4S, iPad 2, original iPad mini, 5th gen iPod Touch) but I would expect all of the remaining models of those to be discontinued this year (apart from the iPhone 4S possibly still being sold as an even cheaper model in "emerging markets"), so that iOS 9 can drop support for the A5 next year.

I think they'll be using the A5 until they discontinue the iPod Touch line...

Is this apples amazing product plan this year? just barf out the pretty much same products they´ve had with slight modifications for a lower price. It´s ALL they released this year: MB air with less than 10% speed increase, iphone 5c 16gb model, a crappy iMac model, and now a slightly modified ipod touch....talk about riding on old waves.

Yawn...

Now THAT'S doubling down on secrecy- although no one really gives a **** about the iPod Touch- I'm surprised that they even came out with a new model.

No update on the UK Apple Site. No wonder no ones buying the iPod touches here.
Ah, reading the announcement - it's going to take a few days.....

Or, you know, just make up for the sheer lack of hardware announcements for 2014 thus far.

Fall is looking mighty busy for Apple if they keep just superficially cutting prices and pushing off updates.
