[Guide] Success! Install 10.8 on old unsupported Mac

PostFactor cannot find ML installer!

Hey guys hope somebody can help, i have both Mountain Lion installer downloaded from app store on a supported mac, and MLPostFactor in the app folder on my old iMac. When i try to run PostFactor i get this message...
"Install OS X Mountain Lion.app not found. Please put the app into your Applications Folder, and restart MLPF"

PLEASE HELP!!

Do you have Mac OS X 10.7.5? I had the same problem yesterday and upgrading from 10.7.1 to 10.7.5 resolves that to me :) :apple:

Hi, I'm pretty sure I do, but il check when I'm home. I'm doing it on a late 2006 iMac 5,1, if that makes any difference.

I have an early 2006 iMAC 2GHz Intel Core Duo. I'm having trouble getting MLP to run. I'm thinking about running everything in target disk mode. Is it possible to get Mountain Lion to run on this machine??

Yes this worked! however, i downloaded the installer from the app store and cannot find what version it is!? I'm hoping its not 10.8.5!

I have a potentially dumb question, is it safe to migrate or do a time machine restore from the old lion partition on the same hard drive, if this is even possible? And will this overrite the new OS with the old OS or not?
 
I did the update to ML on my MBP with the MLpostfactor. Now my trackpad stopped working properly. I can move the cursor on the screen but clicking stopped completely. External usb mouse work doesn't either.
Also my battery isn't recognized anymore. The laptop only works while plugged in.
Any idea what's going on and how to fix this?

Turns out my battery had bulged out inside! Jesus, it was all curved - no wonder the track pad stopped working. I replaced it with an old one and now everything works again.
 
failed to boot the installer of MLpostfactor

hi guys i have a macbook air early 2008 and i try to boot the isntall partition into the computer when is starting and the alt option doesnt show me any option like the EFIboot installer or something, also i try with a usb 8gb to boot and doesnt works i follow every step including erasing the usb and the partiion in HFS whats is the problem the macbook is not supported i need to repair the disk permissions? also i try to use disk maker X to boot the Ml installer and doesnt works, what i need to do?
 
Ay problem reverting back to Lion after this?

If I use the non-MLPF method to upgrade my iMac (specs below) to OS 10.8.4 or 10.8.5 and I don’t like the results, are there any issues with reverting back to OS 10.7.5?

MY MAC:
Late-2006 2.16 GHz Core2Duo iMac 5,1 with 2 GB of RAM and an ATI Radeon X1600 128 MB GPU currently running OS 10.7.5

None, as you have to format your drive.


Have anyone experienced issues with Safari? Everything on my MLPF machine is working perfect - Except for Safari. It will only recoignice command-W 50% of the time. It slows down for no apparent reason at random. Sometimes it just stops working - Not freezing, the windows just appear to stop working and not taking commands of any sort.
 
10.7.2 kexts for MLPF 10.8.5

Hi,

Thanks to your advice, I've had success updating my MLPF 10.8.4 setup to 10.8.5 as well as the latest 2014 security updates. However, now have some minor issues like BlueTooth control panel crashes (but can still add devices) and Screen Sharing gives me a black screen (although it works with TeamViewer).

Was wondering if you'd be willing to send me those 10.7.2 kexts you mentioned - I did not hold on to any of the older versions of OS resources (Lesson Learned)?

Also, have you tracked down and resolved any other issues? Overall the system build feels quite solid...

I created a patched installer using MLPostFactor v0.3 with OS X 10.8.1.
Applying the 10.8.5 combo update was not possible within the installed system, hence I had to boot into the installer, mount the MacOSXUpdCombo10.8.5.dmg (if I remember right) using DiskUtility and run the following command in Terminal:
"installer -pkg /Volumes/MacOSXUpdCombo10.8.5/xyz.pkg -target /Volumes/ML" Same procedure for the supplemental update, afterwards. After reapplying MLPostFactor (10.8.4 chosen), I corrected the OS X version in
/System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist .
Everything worked out-of-the-box.
I encountered critical issues with my AudioQuest DragonFly USB-DAC (high quality USB sound card): After I enabled it in "System Settings" and tried to play a sound (like changing the volume), I encountered a kernel panic related to some audio kexts.
After tinkering around with some userspace stuff (tried to replace /usr/sbin/coreaudiod and its components with Lion 10.7.5 versions) and after realizing, that MLPostFactor makes use of Lions (10.7.5) audio kexts, I replaced some audio kexts with (even older) 10.7.2 versions. (From an old Lion recovery partition)
The kexts in questions were (as far as I remember) :
AppleUSBAudio.kext
IOAudioFamily.kext
AppleAUUC.kext
AppleHDA.kext
(I might put them together in a zip-file)
Audio works flawlessly, again.

I am really pleased with the system.
Browsing is faster, system feels more responsive...
A new spirit flows through the veins of my Macmini. :rolleyes:
(Btw. The FireWire version of the iSight camera works, too.)

Unfortunately, no. You need the Core 2 Duo (emphasis on the 2), as that supports 64-bit. Core Duo doesn't. Sorry :(
 
iMAc 2005 Core Duo can be upgraded with 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo

You'd have to take it apart, but it turns in into a very useful Mac for about $100 total - you should also replace 2GB RAM with 4GB, using two matched chips for best performance. That machine can stream Netflix at 1080p with MLPF 10.8.5

Hello bwinters,

Mac OS X 10.8 requires at least a Intel Core 2 Duo, which is not the same as the Intel Core Duo. Unfortunately, even MLPostFactor can not fix that and as far as I know it won't run on that machine.

Thanks to @hackerwayne and MLPostFactor I managed to install Mac OS X 10.8.5 on the following configuration:

iMac 24" (6,1)
2,16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2 GB DDR2 RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT 256 MB

I guess the MLPostFactor update for 10.9 was never completed or has anyone heard something about it recently?

Probably a good time to look at 10.10 now anyway.
 
Why wouldn't you want 10.8.5 ? I installed 10.8.5 through MLPostFactor, but selected 10.8.4 as a version. I later simply edited the SystemVersion.plist to show 10.8.5 and it seems to work find right now - is there something I am missing?

I really wanted to thank everybody and first of all Wayne for allowing a third life to my Late 2006 Mac mini 1.66 GHz CD, turned 2.0 GHz C2D, firmwared MM2,1 and a second life to my Early 2007 Macbook also 2.0 GHz C2D.

I purchased 10.8.5 and MLPF patched fine despite that the latest option was 10.8.4. Just changed SystemVersion.plist to 10.8.5, then updated and changed build to 12F45 as recommended somewhere and no need to reinstall.

Only few downsides are: 1) SMB not working - but this made me migrate my home network from hybrid AFP/SMB Linux server to all-AFP as I'm dropping all Win PCs. And 2) this Bluetooth panel crash mentioned above.

Also feared that Screen Sharing was working but culprit was my setting. First I would notice my Macbook run fine so the problem seemed to be the infamous headless Macmini issue (though I had a monitor). Swapped the VGA for HDMI and I could get a screen. For the login window to appear, I had to choose a standard resolution.

Everything else seems very smooth and functional. Geekbench now shows 3081 (3049 for the Macbook), like a Late 2009 Mcmini ! (from 2771 @ 32-bit and ~2100 @ 32-bit/1.66 CD, all with 2 GB RAM).

So good that initially I had discarded upgrading to Mavericks one day but there seems to be so much hardware margin that I'm waiting to see if you guys will succeed supporting GMA950.

Mid-2007 MacBook & Internet

A HUGE thank-you to the makers of MacPostFactor!

Mountain Lion 10.8.5 successfully installed on a mid-2007 MacBook model 2,1.

February 2014's Security Update killed its ability to connect to the internet... through Wi-Fi and Ethernet.

Luckily the installation partition hadn't been deleted. I reinstalled OS 10.8.5, applied MacPostFactor, and the MacBook connects to the internet again.

Aside from this all's well. The Finder can act a little funny and lock-up when moving files around but for the MacBook's intended use it's no big deal.

The "10.8.5 Installation" folder is not of any interest.

This only works for Mountain Lion 10.8.5. Earlier versions as well as Mavericks (10.9.X) won't work.
If you install the 10.8.5 supplemental update afterwards you will have to reapply the patches described above.

!!! For anybody else: This is only for MacBook Pro 2,2 and may work on an iMac with ATI X1600 graphics. All other machines are covered by MLPF.

I've done that on my MBP2,2. First I had installed 10.8.5 (via SFOTT), then applied the new Security Update 2014-003 (455 MB via App-Store), thereafter the X1600 and Audio kexts from the given link (via Kext-Utility). Everything went fine and looks good.

Now, when I've copied the OpenCL & OpenGL files from the given link into the respective folders (via Finder within 10.8.5), the Icons in the Desktop menu bar as well as in the Finder menu bar are defective, showing "pixel salad".

What is the best method to patch the Frameworks? Deleting the original files and then replacing with those from the link or just copy the files from the link? There are less files in the link and the original folders contain symbolic links but the patched files don't.

Or are the defective Icons in the menu bars a problem with the new Security-Update 003? This Update includes also patches for the graphics drivers.

I'm having some problem here with the imessage and facetime couldnt signed in. is there anyway i can do to make it work?

I already look up and tried to input my serial number to the nvram using terminal, but still its a no go for the iMessage to work.

Please give me advice on what should i do for making this to work

I had the same issue. Is it giving you a "customer code"? if it is, call AppleCare and tell them the issue and the code (don't mention the unsupported software) and they should be able to reset your Apple account, allowing you to log in. This worked for me, and didn't affect iMessage or FaceTime on any of my other iOS devices or Mac computers

Thank you. Its a good idea there to force it to 32-bit to allow for the 32-bit drivers to work.

Hopefully it brings QE/CI and the ability to play youtube and flash games.

I'll try it and let everyone know.

This happened me... GET RID OF IT; mine actually BURST one day, and while it didn't explode, it filled my room with a gas I can only assume is toxic. (I stuffed a shirt in my mouth, assuming the worst).

It was some scary stuff.

You may try updating to security update, and going back to the install drive, then re-apply the MLPF through that, as it may restore the kexts that got changed.

MacPostFactor is releasing soon... MLForAll on Twitter has hinted within a couple of weeks. Be patient! you may even get Mavericks!
