apple stole my ibook's power supply

i've had some trouble w/ my g4/ibook and it's been to the apple repair center twice. the second time, they requested i include my power supply (i complied) and it was not returned along w/ my ibook.

apple's sending me a replacement, but i just got the email and it said it's a 45w supply. i'm under the impression that the g4/ibook has a bigger wattage supply.

can someone check their's and let me know the wattage? i've got the 1.33 GHz g4 ibook.

I find it hard to believe they actually stole a power supply. But it is possible.

they warn you not to include it or anything else (like a CD in the drive), because there's no guarantee of return. but, they requested it, and said they put it in their notes.

honestly, i expected it. i would've been surprised if it was in there.

because they asked me to include it. the issue i was having was related to charging the battery.

if they thought the power supply was causing a problem they would request it. dodgy power can cause problems.

May be the battery is faulty.

quick background:

1. ibook was intermittently overheating during charging
2. apple replaced the motherboard
3. now, battery was charging extremely slowly ( >100 hours )
4. apple sent replacement battery, same symptom
5. i tried another power supply (65 watt), same symptom
6. sent ibook back w/ new battery and original power supply
7. motherboard replaced again, ibook returned w/o power supply
8. apple agrees to send replacement power supply, but dispatch email says it's of the 45 watt variety
9. i post here

I'm pretty sure the 45W is the correct one for the ibooks and 12" powerbooks. The 15 and 17 Powerbooks need the 65W

Do you have the 12" 1.33 ghz? The 12" Powerbooks and iBooks include the 45 watt adapter in the box. All others include the 65 watt adapter. However, either one will work with the 12".

Yes, just another confirmation, for the 12" iBook, mine also came with a 45W and I purchased another 45W, and both work fine...

However, look at the tech specs of the current iBooks -- no part number is given for the included power supply, but only one part number referenced for an additional power supply for both models is the 65W model. Is this just because Apple only sells replacement 65W ones?

In any event, I can't say 100% certain for the 14" iBook, but the 12" will work with the smaller supply.

(EDIT: P.S., I have the original, Rev. A 800 MHz iBook G4 / 12")

thanks for checking, guys. i do indeed have the 12" model (sorry, i should have specified).

the 65w one i have is the replacement i bought from microcenter for my g3 ibook, after its 45w one died when i came back from london. the 65w does indeed work for both the g3 and g4 ibooks i have, but i believe the 45w that came w/ my g3 ibook does _not_ work w/ my g4 ibook (post-london, i also got a 45w replacement direct from apple).

i do not want to do the experiment where i try that 45w one in my g4 ibook. last thing i need is another problem.

I don't blame you for not wanting to experiment but somehow I thought all new AC adapters for pbs or iBooks were all the same wattage. I also thought that if it was a lower wattage, it would just make your 'book charge slower. But that is just my possibly naive impression.

The current 12" iBook and PB share the same power adaptor (45W) which come with Mac in the box. When you buy a replacment or another power adaptor, you cannot buy a 45W version. They only sell $65 W version.

that's not true. when i replaced my g3/ibook power adapter through apple, they sold me the 45w version (though microcenter offered only the 65w one).

indeed, the one they're shipping to me to replace the one they "stole" is a 45w verison.

Interesting. Was the adapter in a retail box? The only type I've ever seen in the retail box was the 65w.

I bought an additional power supply for my grandma's G3 900mhz 14" iBook and it was 45w...I don't know what takes the 65w...

Apple should really publish a chart or something...would make it a lot easier.
