I have a late 2012 iMac 27 and plan to get a Retina iMac 5K.
Has anybody used the iMac 5K as the computer and an iMac 27 (thin profile, 2012 or 2013) in target mode as an additional screen to the 5K?

How does it look when mobing a window from computer to display(non 5K)?, and do the ports on the target mode machine work similar to those on thunderbolt LED display (where USB and thunderbolt ports on the monitor function)

Information with first hand experience on this setup would be appreciated.

TDM does not share ports, only the display. Otherwise I'm sure it's completely doable, other than the fact that your old iMac would look significantly more pixelated when placed next to the Retina one.

Using 2012 27” iMac in TDM with 5k iMac

Yes, I have the 5k coming soon; and, I assumed I could use my mid 2012 27” iMac in TDM. I now know the 5k cannot itself be used in TDM; but, what about the reverse, which is the more likely use I would think. Best, Zephar

You can use the 2012 as a display for the retina with a Thunderbolt cable.
