Haven't these things been out for years?

You have no idea how many application on iPad can not run via cable. I work with Midi and I have downloaded many instruments for my iPad and any of them can transmit midi (and forget about audio) via USB connected to your iMac. iPads are pretty much back in the 70's regarding midi desimplementation when people used to use control voltage to make electronic instruments talk to each other.

Apple just do not care about opening the channels for the cables. You have to do everything via Wi-Fi.

Hmf, I loved this post and was about to instant buy this if there wasnt this problem with it using that much cpu. I hope that guy works on the cpu front first, lag isnt too much the problem if it lags a little bit but CPU is the important part. If I'm on the way and using the macbook with the iPad as display I dont want it to be that hot just to use another display

Awesome!

This app is simply awesome. Been using it for several minutes now and I love it. I have a late 2013 retina MBP (one of the highest power models) and an iPad Air, and it's running flawlessly. The lag is barely noticeable with retina and 60fps, and I really mean barely.

I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that my iPads touch screen still functions while acting as a desktop. Touching the screen instantly moves the mouse over to the finger and acts as a click, and clicking and dragging works also. I think future versions would be awesome if they could integrate other touch features, such as pinching your fingers still zooms in on a picture or web page.

I'm a web developer and I love that I can have Coda 2 open on my laptop and Safari on my iPad. Just using command + tab allows me to switch flawlessly. Really cool app.

Great app, works like a charm on my rMBP. You can lower the frame rate & resolution on the iPad to lower power consumption & increase speed.

Just downloaded and it works perfectly. I will get so much use out of it! Yeah it's a tiny teeny bit laggy but not that noticeable. Highly recommended!

I am not sure if I can even compare them. Been awhile since I used Air Display, but my experience with it was just awful. Terribly sluggish, and only use I was able to make of it was as some 3rd rate document viewer.

With this it is pretty smooth, Not entirely perfect at 60fps and retina resolution. However it seems to work quite well, I can even watch a movie on it if I wanted without any issue.
Although there is some lag when sending over an application from the host to the iPad.

There is also the matter of CPU usage, it hogs quite a bit of resources there. Used up to 170% on a late 2012 iMac 3,2 GHz Intel Core i5 CPU. Doesn´t seem I will use it with 60fps and retina on my old 2009 MBP.

Another gripe I have with it is that to reconnect it again, I have to disconnect the cable and then reconnect it. I would have preferred if it automatically connected when the app was launched.

Well this was my initial impression of using it for a short while. Perhaps it might change, but for now I am satisfied with it.

Duet for iPad and mac

Product does not work on macboo pro 10.20.2 and iPad air iOS 8.1.2

When activated the Mac screen goes to the background and the iPad keeps the connect screen and does nothing.
Mbp is not usable
Duet web site does not display correctly on MBP
need to find a way to remove the duet Mac app from MBP
I do not want to rebuild my MBP

INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO REMOVE MAC APP WOULD BE APPRECIATED.
Regards

Look in the toolbar and find the duet app icon. There's a gear in the bottom left when you click on it that has an uninstall link.

Will this work with my Kindle Paperwhite?

Maybe there is some way to run it as an external display. I doubt it would work very well.
Either way, what this article refers to is only for using it with a Mac OS X 10.9+ together with an iPad or iPhone running iOS 6+

Working awesome here, super clear and fast.

Much better than AirDisplay. AirDisplay was great, for the time, but you really didn't want to put anything that was updated very often on that screen...

Does not work with "all iPads"

Although this article says "the app will also work with all iPads or iPhones running iOS 5.1.1 or later" and this is matched by the requirements as listed in the App Store, on my original iPad the app just exits.

Going to the web site for support, I see that it *now* says "works with all iPad hardware (with iOS 6 and later)".

I will be asking for a refund based on the...lack of accuracy.

Duet Display

Hey Guys,

I'm the developer the app. Glad to see so many people like it, and just some heads up:

Don't purchase if on iOS 5.1.1. I do plan to support it very soon, but test flight is sadly only iOS 8. Was only able to test on a handful of devices and there are issues that you should wait for to be fixed.

Don't use if you are on the 10.10.2 beta. It is buggy, not duet. Hopefully those get sorted out soon.

Obviously the better your Mac, the less lag and CPU drain. This is not mentioned enough. Also there are several optimizations I put in that greatly reduce this. I think the effect is pretty overstated.

If you run into any issues, email me. I'm sorry if it takes a bit right now, it's just me and launch day can be hectic. But I promise I will resolve all of your issues.

Thank you for confirming that you *know* your requirements as listed in the App Store are inaccurate. I will be forwarding that information to Apple when I complain.

I would say more, but I am so ticked at you right now it is better that I do not.

Wow - so many people here are downers, or big time power users.

Many people could use a 2nd/external monitor. But, not enough money or desk real estate to have it all the time. This is a great idea for those that just need an occasional external monitor.

BUT - sadly, to check it out, you have to BUY the damn software and do way to return it.

Based on the CPU issues, I am debating about spending the $10.

I would not spend the money on it at its current state. Wait until you see more reviews and for them to fix the CPU hog issues and a few other troublesome problems. Its def not worth $10 right now.. I regret buying it so soon even tho its only $10 and it won't kill me I still don't feel good about the purchase because of the issues with it.

Sorry dude but I have a new MacBook Pro Retina, iPad Air 2 and iMac 27 with 32GB of ram.. Duet did not perform nearly as well as your saying. This sounds more like someone from their marketing department posting in macrumors... I have extremely powerful systems and it does not perform as you say. Dragging does not scroll items in a list

I love this app. Just bought it and tried it out. Didn't have my iPad, so I used my iPhone 6+. Compared to my monitor, the resolution is tiny, so I couldn't put much on that screen, but it still worked amazingly well. I can't wait to use this at home with my iPad. I have some specific uses that will really come in handy.

Great app, clean design and hardly any lag. Travel a lot for work and this is a welcome addition to my 2011 MBA as it replaces the way I work at home where the MBA is usually connected to a cinema screen.

Looking forward to further improvements. Would make duet desktop software available through Mac App store.

Retina MBP Scaled Mode

Looks like this app forces me to use "Best for Display" mode on my Mac when I like running in the pseudo-higher-res scaled mode. Is that going to be fixed soon? It's a deal-breaker for me. :(

I'm Impressed so far....

I don't usually right reviews and I can assure anyone that I have no relation to the developer. Having said that, my initial impression (last 30 min) with this app arrangement is that it is very promising for the road warrior. I am a video editor by trade and so I immediately tried it with FCPX and it worked!

What works: Video on second display works well on these settings - Resolution - Regular; Frame Rate - 60 FPS. Otherwise at retina it is choppy. (video quality surprisingly good at Regular settings). Couldn't tell difference between 30 and 60 fps as far as processor performance is concerned.

Works well with my rMBP Late 2013 2.3 ghz 16gb ram running 10.10.1 and iPad 3 (30 pin connector) as well as iPad Mini 3 (lightning connector) [also worked with my hackintosh (HTPC) running 10.9.5]

This should be a great setup as developer continues to update the app.

DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME! I went into system preferences-display and dragged the Menu Bar to the iPad display... this totally screwed it up and had to do hard reset of both rMBP and iPad! Be ware!

Is it possible to connect two iPads to the same Mac using this?

I tried this.. did not recognize second iPad.

Thank you for your work. I do have the flickering issue, but I was in the process of downgrading OS X anyway since I also now have wifi issues on the recent betas and I'm sure that will be a non-issue once I get the chance to do so. I am using a Late 2011 MacBook Pro with 30 FPS (it doesn't work very well at all with 60FPS), and it works great.

Even in clamshell mode, which I'm very happy about. I'm currently using a cheap Vizio and do not like the colors it gives me. I've tried over and over to calibrate it the way I want, but have gone nowhere. My MacBook Pro's keyboard doesn't work, so I am in the situation where I have to work with what I've got until I can afford an iMac.

No lag, and looks miles better than the other screen. So I am happy.

As a mobile video producer, having my iPad as a second display to my MBP is a huge advantage. I can move palettes and settings and media browsers to that screen and give more space on my notebook display to my timeline and viewer. Just bought this because lag on other apps is just annoying.

Hey,

I am really sorry for the bad experience. The requirement is accurate, it is iOS 5.1.1 but some users are having issues. You can't change the requirement once it's launched and the Test Flight program makes it hard to test all configs < iOS 8. This will be fixed in the next version.

Again, really sorry.

Hey,

I wish I had a marketing department. This will sound unbelievable but there is one person who made this app, me. I truly think this is an off issue with the installation or something I overlooked on your computer. Email me through the app and I will sort this out, I'm not going to let your money go to waste. And if I can't fix it, I will personally paypal you your money back.

That being said, this launch became larger than imagined so it may take me a few hours to respond.
