TV shows - 17 Series, 5.7days, 121.99Gb about 10% of what I own.

Now that I have a broadcom chip for my ATV1, I'll be re-ripping my movies to 1080p.

78gb of music. Mostly hip hop and jazz. Always looking for more.

About 20gb of movies/TV shows. Stopped downloading this stuff for a while, though.

How does everyone with a large iTunes library manage the library so that you get a regular rotation either in iTunes or on your devices?

My Library is about 120gb. I use my mac, my phone (32gb) and the off chance my iPod (160gb).

CaseyFriday posted a great document that uses smart playlist to manage music.

That's an informative doc, thanks for posting it! Only problem is the author mentions that his automation process slows a 5th gen. iPod touch down to the point it takes 90 seconds to update, meanwhile you're waiting for a song to play.

I have the 128 GB 6th gen. iPod touch and 500 Gb of music on my Mac Pro; I may try using those smartlists to get the most out of my music, but if it still takes more than a few seconds to update on the touch, it's not practical.

I'm not sure how he got his smart playlists to update automatically. I'm using a 5.5G, and they don't update automatically. I did have a buddy in college (who shared that document with me) who said he did see the slow updates on the 5.5G, and he said the updates were instant on his iPod Touch 1st Gen. If they were instant on that iPod Touch, I'm pretty sure they'd be instant on the new one.

The kicker is that you have to have your entire library on the iPod in order to get automatic updating. That's where I'm confused, as I do have my full 40GB library on my 64GB iPod 5.5G, but it doesn't auto-update.

All right, who has the largest iTunes library?

I currently have 372GB...

Habitus :apple:

Apple's bumped the iTunes Match limit to 100K songs, so I've loaded my entire library into iTunes:

I've been using the SmartLists and they work great. I use them to play songs I like along with those I haven't yet rated. That way I'm listening to new stuff and finding gems to add to my Most Faved list.

I don't mind that the lists aren't updating in real time on the iPod touch because they update just fine when syncing with my Mac Pro.

I've got three lists set up (Rock genres, Country genres, and Christmas genres) and they all run without delay on the iPod. I have each Mixpool playlist set for 500 songs, so I don't put all of my library on the iPod (can't since it's approx 400 Gb).

2.4TB (2,400 GB)

Movies = 1.6TB (1,600 GB)
TV Shows = 0.5TB (500 GB)
Music = 0.3TB (300 GB)

It was about 1TB bigger but it was just getting silly so i've had a few big culls...

After about a month and doing some bulk deletes from my library I am down to about 30gb of music 0gb for movies and 0.270gb for tv shows.

I love spreadsheets, for those interested I you can see the changes in my library size since I have been tracking this in late 2012.

Music: 18045 songs = 324.03 Gb
Movies: 1158 movies = 3.14 Tb
TV Shows: 2383 episodes = 2.36 Tb

to the max extant possible I encode my stuff in 1080P HD and lossless audio.

As of now: 817GB of music, 41505 tracks, 117.2 days. (~50% through re-ripping to lossless)

If you were just going to trim it down, why collect the stuff in the first place? Did your musical tastes change that much?

Ooops. Replied to the wrong post of yours.

Priorities have changed I listen to a lot more music online. I have moved a lot recently and its more convenient to have everything on an internal drive than external. I am also only going to keep my absolute favourite albums. The reason for going down to 20gb of music is because that is how much free space I have for music on my phone. I also listen to a lot more podcasts which cuts into the time I had to enjoy music.

How do you store that?

I have a dedicated AMD Fusion mini-itx machine with 6 hard drives (in a snazzy looking fractal design case). I looked for awhile to find a mini-itx board that maximized the number of SATA inputs. I did it on the cheap and didn't want to use hardware raid. 3X3TB drives in raid 5, 2X3TB drives that are not redundant... and then the OS is on its own tiny hard drive. I initially used ubuntu as a server, but decided I wanted to host iTunes on the machine so i was forced to install windows server 2008 (courtesy of dreamspark for free since I am in grad school). It is nice to be able to have it host iTunes 24/7 to my apple tv and home share to my laptop and iDevices, plus it is a network drive for me to use with my laptop (and my wife's laptop as well).
