New Video iPod on Apple's 30th Anniversary (April 1)?

I expect lots of fake rumors for that day. At least one rumor of a major buyout like every year. Be lucky if you get a 10% discount at your local Apple store on select items (iPod leather case, Hi-Fi, Mini, and some existing but great PPC products)

I hate it when people criticize spelling and grammar in posts. But when they incorrectly criticize correct grammar, I have to say something. 🙂

Back on topic, I'm crossing my fingers for April 1. I gave my iPod photo to my wife, anticipating something new would be out soon. I'll pay $400 for it. $500 is getting a bit steep. I'm hoping the cheaper one has at least 30 gigs.

Firstly, I said don't shoot me if I'm wrong. I looked it up- the subject is indeed 'none', and not 'images'. With mass-nouns, e.g. 'sheep', 'wheat' etc., you have to use the singular. With count-nouns, e.g. 'books', you can use either 'is' or 'are', but 'are' usually sounds better. I would suppose that 'images' is a 'count noun'.

'None' is short for 'no one'. Therefore it is singular because 'one' is singular. The correct word is: is.

While we're at it, Apple Computer Inc. is also singular. 'Apple' does and Apple's employees' do. Often people incorrectly mean the collective noun 'Apple's employees' when they use the word 'Apple' and therefore incorrectly assume that it is plural. It is not.

To argure, as has been the case in the past, that colloquial usage makes it ok, is simply wrong. Just because you, or those around you, say it, doesn't make it any more grammatically correct.

Let's put this one to bed once and for all.

I'm in for a full screen touch screen iPod as long as Apple didn't cut any corners on quality.

Yeah, I own the 5G. But a bigger screen would be nice since all I use it for is movies.

And a 80gig drive is key...

Read http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-non2.htm for the opposing view. It looks like 'none are' is completely acceptable.
 
This is the worst time of year for reading a rumor's website. Anything from March thru April 2nd can't be believed. Could this be real? Is it an April fool's joke?

I never trust the "analysts" anyway. They never get anything right.

(If Apple releases a 4" video ipod of April 1st, I'll use photoshop to make it look like I'm eating my own shoe)

Ugh, this again, so soon?

Two comments, in case it really happens this time:

1. Its (large-scale) success will depend (like the iPod) on the value and depth of the content available through iTunes.

2. The fakeups are all identical! 😡 I know, it's the obvious form/screen-factor, but come on you fakesters! Push the white acrylic envelope a little. At least one of you, sell us something a little crazy. You know someone on these forums will *drool* for it! 😀

(OK, I admit, I just don't want one coming out because I got a 5G for Christmas, and there is basically no way I'm going be be able to get my hands on anything new for many, many (many) months...)
 
I'm American, and I have never said "none is." That sounds to me, albeit only a grammar novice, like a gross grammatical mistake.

If it ran Word, Excel, Mail, iCal and was WiFi and evdo enabled, it would be anything but a fun new toy, to me at least.

not likely in my opinion for it to be released at all, let alone a Saturday. Im still new to Apple doings, do they really release anniversary products at all? Tuesday maybe, but still taking it with a grain of salt...🙂

This thread is many things to many people. I love it.

I think there is something big in the works for the 30th Anniversary, and something like full length movies in the iTMS would qualify, in my opinion. As far as the possibility of the video iPod goes, I could see Apple introduce it as discrete from the current 5G iPod so that the iPod line consisted of the shuffle, nano, 5G and video iPod. If that is the case, one has to wonder if the new rumored video iPod will cannibalize sales of the 5G.

Maybe Apple will have to drop the price of the 5G to keep it around.
 
I don't know about the 400-500 dollar thing... Sony's PSP has a 4in screen, a UMD reader, a mem-card reader, plus controls and more for $250.

The big differences are form factor, the touchscreen, and the built in HDD, but do you guys think those things could drive the price up nearly double?

Anyway, I hope it comes out on April 1st, because its the day before my birthday!

If apple wants to keep the 30gig at $299 and rack in the profit because they think it will sell I could see it. After all we did see a $600 iPod photo.

If it ran Word and Excel it'd need a keyboard or one of those thumboards which I don't understand. I would, however, enjoy it having email access (and thereby WiFi). Also, forgive my ignorance but what's evdo?

Further, if it did run Word, Mail &c. could a business buy one like it would a blackberry? That would be sweet, that is if I worked (I'm at university) or in an industry that would get me one of those.

Well firstly a 60GB ATA 1.8" hard drive by itself is $150 (http://www.memorylabs.net/hi16054trc4h.html), so that's most of it. Add in metal external parts (over plastic) and the touchscreen that would make up for most of the cost difference.
