I have this powerbook:

http://support.apple.com/specs/powerbook/PowerBook_G4_12-inch_DVI.html

How big of a HDD can I get in there? Where should I purchase it from? Any specific vendors better than another? How hard is it to install? Any guides on installing the drive?

Thanks

I have a 12" 867MHz PowerBook (older than yours) with a 120 GB Western Digital Scorpio 5400 RPM and 8 mb cache

You should check out the Western Digital and Seagate offerings.

Western Digital "Scorpio"

Seagate "Momentus"

If you want to notice extra performance go with at least 5400 RPM and be sure to get the ones with 8 mb cache

You need to buy a 2.5" ATA hard drive

There is a thread on this somewhere but I believe the 12 inch machines are limited to an 80 GB drive.

I would suggest buying from OtherWorld Computing.

I don't think that is true, but you're unsure so I won't press it. But I wonder what would limit the 12" PB in regard to HD space? I was under the impression that as long as its PATA and its a 2.5" drive, it wouldn't matter.

check out http://www.pbfixit.com for guides.

i've taken apart and put back together my 12" powerbook in order to put in a new hard drive. as long as you take your time, have the proper tools and are careful its not that bad.
