I was just listening to Dire Straits' Money for Nothin' and I thought to myself, this has got to be one of the greatest intros to a rock song there is. The building synths, the drum beats that add a little bit more each loop, the building crecendo, all the way to the ultimate climax: a rocking solo guitar riff. The rest of the song I think is okay, but that intro is awesome.

So what do you guys think? What are some of the greatest intros in rock history?

from the top of my head:

ac/dc - thunderstruck
deep purple - smoke on the water
the jam - town called malice ( you hear about 3 notes of the intro and you KNOW your foot is going to gain its own life)

It's just too bad that I have no way of listening to some of these and future ones that will be posted. iTunes previews are usually in the middle of a song.:(

Another one to salivate over: Foreplay/Long Time by Boston or Renegade by STYX

Hot For Teacher by Van Halen has the best drum intro ever!

Here's the video:

(skip that first minute of intro)

For best rock intro there are many good ones, Jimi Hendrix "Voodoo Child" (or 'Chile' if you prefer), then there's Kiss with "I want to Rock and Roll all Night", and Nirvana "Smells Like Teen Spirt" comes to mind...

My favorite is the intro to Matthew Sweet's "Girlfriend". He's actually really good at writing good rock intro's. Other good ones from him are "Sick of Myself", "Holy War", and "Ugly Truth Rock" to name a few.

down with the sickness, by disturbed (personally my favorite rock song overall, if you ignore the bit at the end where he's screaming about his mother...)
or Crawling in the Dark, by Hoobastank. Just the first 10 or 15 seconds are so awesome.
