I have a nearly three year old iBook that has recently gone bad. I believe it is the logic board. Is there a cost to have the Genius Bar check it out? I didn't purchase AppleCare. There's a new store opening in Birmingham, AL tomorrow and I was thinking about taking it and letting them check it out.

Last time I was there, there was a 2 drink minimum. The Apple Kool-Aid is to die for. :p

I've already had the Kool Aid, I'm getting up at 5 am for a grand opening two hours away. :D :apple:

I tried to make a reservation via the web site, but the new store isn't listed. I'm going to take the iBook anyway to see what they can tell me about it.

if you don't want to drive 121 miles to the apple store, check out your local apple specialist. chances are that they are a lot friendlier, cheaper, and actually appreciate your business!

Not in the UK (from my experience) The Apple Specialists around me are slow and don't exude confidence in my opinion

Then I wouldn't have had the experience of a grand opening! :D

Our Genius was very nice and very experienced. He started in Memphis, moved to Charlotte, and now has returned to Birmingham, which is near his hometown.

We sent the iBook off to be repaired. He agreed with me (and other MR peeps) that the logic board was bad. $280 plus tax to send it off and have them ship it back to our house.

The Geniuses in the Sheffield store know what they are doing. Whenever I am in their i always listen out for them and have never heard them give dud advice or miss information. The are very helpful and polite, can't say a bad word about them.

Well given the process i went through and the people i met for the Apple store jobs apple want image not knowledge. I was passed as being to qualified. What i think they meant was this guy would sell a mini to someone we could flog a pimped 24" iMac too.

If there is one thing i don't like about apple its the Apple Store side of things.
