Hey everyone!
My brother is looking to get a cheap(er) laptop. I want to try to keep him ?, but cost is a factor. We have it down to three options:

1) Used MPB G4 667MHz PPC, 512 MB, combo drive, 30GB HDD
2) Used G3 iBook, 800MHz, 128 MB ram, OS X and OS 9.

The version of OS X wouldn't matter, as we would be updating to 10.5 [hopefully] this October.

3) A $600-$900 future shop/best buy PC (on average 1GB ram, 100GB hard drive, Windows Vista home Premium)

If someone could help compare these to each other, and maybe to a 2.53GHz P4 PC (thats what my family uses) it would be a great help!

Thanks!!
-Vince

The iBook is 300, and the MBP is 849
Er... let me just further clarify...

2) Used G3 iBook, 800MHz, 128 MB ram
Um... the processor would lead me to believe that you're talking about a PowerBook which used the older PPC architecture and not a MacBook Pro which is Intel.

Is that right?

Yes it is a PowerBook, and that was meant to be <1000 CAD.
Good point about the G3 though...thanks.

umm.. its safe to say that an iBook G3 won't run 10.5... the powerbook (or MBP), however, will.

I'm sorry, let me clarify. I was NOT implying this. I think it's the 128MB that will kill it. If the iBook G3s that have Firewire are limited out of Leopard, it will almost certainly be artificially, and there will almost certainly be something like xpostfacto to get it on there. Leopard isn't going to need altivec or anything else that would prevent a G3 from working on it....

that may be, but the max ram on a G3 iBook is 640 MB.. Leopard with 640 mb of ram probably wont be too functional. i'm not saying that the iBook won't serve your needs, it just probably wont do too well with 10.5. I'd stick with tiger if you get the iBook. If you get the powerbook, go ahead and get 10.5
