I heard that these screens are identical.. however looking at the specs it seems the pixels are doubled in the nano as opposed to the iPod 5G? (320x240 vs 640x480). This would affect converting the video in iSquint and such, no?

yes it would. Well, it would still play the lower resolution video so there's no need to reconvert older ones (unless you really wanted the extra resolution and thought it's worth your time). But from now on, just use the "iPhone" video settings (until apps are updated). All Nano, Classic, Touch and iPod play the same resolution video.

hope this helps?

My apologies. I just got around to actually watching Steve Job's keynote and apparently the SCREEN of the Nano has the same exact # of pixel as the 5g iPod. But on the Apple site it does say that the Nano can play "up to" 640x480 video.

Alright thank you. Now I'm wondering though, how can a 320x240 screen play a 640x480 video?

I have one final question before I rip episodes of a show to my iPod... what are the recommended video and audio bitrates for the new 3G nano?

Nano's screen is 0.5" smaller than 5/6G screen, but the resolution is the same and is 320x240.

Both can play 640x480 videos though, but when displayed on built-in screens the video is downscaled to 320.

You can see Apple's specs for maximum bitrates for new nanos, but i believe they are the same as for 5g iPods and are about 1500-1600 kbps H.264

Ok thank you. What would you recommend however for the ideal bitrates? The maximum? Or lower? I think somewhere I read it's good to use a 400 bitrate for video and 128 for audio... and 44.1khz

Depends on how you want to use those videos.

I, for example, after ripping from DVD burn them to a dvd-r for viewing later after i delete them from my iTunes (HD size is limited), so I rip them at maximum bitrate possible for iPod, usually 1400-1500 setting in handbrake, h.264 640x480. Very often I like to view these movies on my tv from iPod, so higher quality is required.

But if you plan to watch stuff only on your iPod, I think you can set 600-700 kbps 320x240. Thats what I used when iPod didn't support more than 320x240 7xx kbps videos.

I'm confused a little bit more about the bitrate for the video... I've seen instructions saying to set it between 400-600, however HandBrake's settings for lowrez iPods says 700? If it's low shouldn't it be 400 or lower?

Man, just rip something with different settings and see what works best for you ...
