My friend lent me his IBook, but it wont bring up the log in screen. All it shows is a small pc in the middle of screen and then some writing. I would ask my friend for the mac boot cd but he's gone to china for 2 weeks so that impossible.

Heres the writing the came up on the screen, if anyone could identify whether its a hardware or software problem it would be greatly appreciated.

That is a Kernal panic. What kind of iBook is it? That will tell me weather it's a software or hardware issue. Just restart the computer and it should be fixed.

I'm not that good with mac but I can tell you its an IBook G3. I had shut it down and I just turned it back on and it now brings up a folder in the middle of screen which is flashing between the a mac symbol and a question mark. Also I have tried restarting and restarting over an over but it didnt work.

I also try the command + s, command at startup but it didnt work, neither the command + v/command + option + v work and pressing shift doesnt work either. But the option + command + p + r does work.

Thanks for the info. If it was mean I would but since it isnt and I dont want to get into any trouble I leave to him to do. Also when I start it up now, it shows the small pc in the middle of screen and then after a while has a small spinning wheel in the top left corner of screen.

Question, is it possible for me to boot it use a boot disk and get it to work or even reformat the harddrive and see if that works.

Try booting from an OSX install disc (if you can) and running disc utility. Check the SMART status, and run a permissions repair and disc repair. Then try rebooting and see what happens.

Ibook G3s are old enough that their harddrives start to fail simply due to a lack of reallocation blocks (I've had one go through that). This is usually detected by SMART (it will say "failing" or "failed"). You can boot from an OS disc or a firewire drive, though.

By the way, it's probably not the motherboard, as you usually get no info if you the motherboard is failing, it just won't boot or will to a blank screen.

Yep thats why I thought it was the hard drive.

To the OP: Yes you can boot from another mac; hook up the firewire cable then on the working mac restart holding T down, and then I don't know what happens :D

I dont have the OS X cd cause he didnt give it to me. As I tried to run the boot selection at startup it work, cause I got to the selection screen but for some reason, sometimes the harddrive doesnt show up or it shows up and then when I click the next arrow it disappears.

I have download the Ubuntu for Mac and I was wondering if it could be used to help fix the problem I'm having. Also when I startup the IBook it reaches the screen with the small pc in the center of screen and after a while a spinning wheel appear in the top left corner and no matter how long I leave it for, it just stays on that screen.

I don't know; if you know enough about Ubuntu to set up a diagnostic boot disc, go for it. I doubt it'll help much, though, and I don't know if you can fix problems within an OSX install using Ubuntu (they have different kernels).

Do you know anyone with a Mac? I think booting it as a Firewire drive is your best option, though I think based on your last post that it may be a dying drive altogether (though definitely worth finding out).
