iBook Help

My friend lent me his IBook, but it wont bring up the log in screen. All it shows is a small pc in the middle of screen and then some writing. I would ask my friend for the mac boot cd but he's gone to china for 2 weeks so that impossible.

Heres the writing the came up on the screen, if anyone could identify whether its a hardware or software problem it would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not that good with mac but I can tell you its an IBook G3. I had shut it down and I just turned it back on and it now brings up a folder in the middle of screen which is flashing between the a mac symbol and a question mark. Also I have tried restarting and restarting over an over but it didnt work.

I also try the command + s, command at startup but it didnt work, neither the command + v/command + option + v work and pressing shift doesnt work either. But the option + command + p + r does work.

Thanks for the info. If it was mean I would but since it isnt and I dont want to get into any trouble I leave to him to do. Also when I start it up now, it shows the small pc in the middle of screen and then after a while has a small spinning wheel in the top left corner of screen.

Question, is it possible for me to boot it use a boot disk and get it to work or even reformat the harddrive and see if that works.

I dont have the OS X cd cause he didnt give it to me. As I tried to run the boot selection at startup it work, cause I got to the selection screen but for some reason, sometimes the harddrive doesnt show up or it shows up and then when I click the next arrow it disappears.

I have download the Ubuntu for Mac and I was wondering if it could be used to help fix the problem I'm having. Also when I startup the IBook it reaches the screen with the small pc in the center of screen and after a while a spinning wheel appear in the top left corner and no matter how long I leave it for, it just stays on that screen.
