Hi guys,

I have recently purchased a 20" 2.4 iMac with 750Gb HD. (Delivery expected 10 - 14th)

Is there any known problems I should look out for with this configuration??

Many thanks.

I think your solid bro i have the same config and i have no problems.

Going by the boards here:

1. Screen needs to be recalibrated out of the box.

2. Screen will still have a minor color shift from top to bottom even after calibration.

3. Some reports of artifacts and freezing when using the video card heavily.

4. Some reports of fan noise and buzzing (although, IIRC, less than when the previous gen came out).

I'm still going to buy 2. ;)

I've had my iMac 20" 2.4 since August 16th. I upped the memory to 4Gb and have had absolutely no problems at all. The color is fine and there is no shift anywhere I can see. It took me 5 minutes to get used to the keyboard and I prefer it over any other I had tried. There have been no sounds eminating from it, so that isn't an issue. This is just a good solid computer and you will love it.:D:apple::D

Plenty of positive here, let's hope I'm as happy as cah87 & Gaelic1.

Thanks guys!

I have one except with 500GB hard Drive. I LOVE IT.

Only had two problems.

Stuck Pixel (Went away)
Screen gets dirty fast (Haven't cleaned it properly yet, though)

There are some problems with these right now. I would say more than most new models have when released. I would honestly wait a month then buy. I've just got 2 faulty ones in a row.

Be wary of iTrueBelievers, gradient deniers, and defect minimizers who occasionally lurk on Mac discussion boards. They will enthusiastically assure you -- with fanatical certitude -- that the new iMacs have absolutely NO significant issues: The brightness gradients don't exist ...or are exceedingly rare, ...or trivially minor ...and besides, "that's normal" for LCD displays.

Next, they will then explain -- in fluent pseudo-scientific technobabble -- how those [imaginary] gradients can easily be "corrected" with magical ICC profiles and/or careful "calibration" (preferably, with the axis of the display pointed directly at Cupertino).

OTOH, maybe Mother Apple's loyal defenders are correct, and maybe the (20" and 24") iMac color/brightness gradient problems really are rare/overblown/exaggerated. But if that's case, why is it that NOT ONE photograph has appeared showing an AL iMac screen with uniform color and brightness against a solid-color background? NOT ONE, nada, zero!

...very mysterious,

LK

My (returned) 20" iMac -- nearly identical to 6-8 others on the showroom floor.
(And yes, the icons at top and bottom of the screen are digitally identical.)

Color profiles, in order: iMac, Adobe RGB (1998), CustomCal_#1, CustomCal_#2.

..."calibrate" THAT!

.

You may want to be aware of some hard crash probs that I and a number of others are having with this model. The best way I can explain these crashes would be to say it's as if you suddenly pulled the plug from the wall. Apple help has not been able to resolve this yet by phone. I have the Apple care and may end up having to take it in.
The problem is that it's not something you can replicate at will so what they will probably do is say they couldn't find anything wrong.

Search apple discussion forums for threads.
Aside from that this Apple product is a thing of beauty as all are including my still working llC with tractor printer. :)

You do get used to it though.

And i've got used to my brand new iMac locking up half a dozen times a day. Doesn't mean its right, nor acceptable however.
The screen isn't great, but on the scale of things, thats the very least of my worries with these latest iMacs.

I've lost count of the hours i've put in to try and resolve the problems i've had with 2 of these iMacs now. I feel like i've been doing Apples beta testing for them, and paid them for the privilege. It certainly doesn't look like they did much testing of these iMacs themselves.. Cost cutting I guess.
AppleCare claim not to know about the problems and Apple as a whole are not fessing up either. And after 6+ weeks, that is just plain wrong.

I emailed Apple executive relations on monday to let them know that my 2nd iMac is just as crap as the first one. No reply. Called them today, and no one is in to take my call, and currently my call has not been returned. I've been quite polite with them too. But that could be about to end today as im all out of patience now.

Sorry to put a downer on things.. I've been a Mac user for 15 years or so, and generally been a fan and pretty happy with all that I bought. But this is my worst Apple experience yet, by a long long shot. Plus I cant really just put this whole thing down to bad luck, when Apples own discussion forums have an alarmingly large number of similar reports to mine.

I pretty much dont care anymore if the fault is hardware or software. It doesnt matter if the thing doesnt work properly. Either way, only Apple can fix it, and they are taking way too long.
I will try to get a refund in full, and maybe purchase again when Apple decides to build them properly.

Oh well, let's hope I do not get the same nightmare I had with my MacBook & MBP!!!

Got mine yesterday. Screen calibration is perfect out of the box. Evenly lit, no colour shift, no stuck or dead pixels. Haven't heard the fan yet. All in all, pretty darned perfect.

Great news zen, hope it lasts and mine is as perfect as yours!

I see you're going for the 750GB HDD option - this is a good move I think. I got the 500GB option, but both mean the machine will be a factory-new build.

Not sure whether this is a placebo effect or not, but I kinda like that. This means it was built and tested/QCed just over a week ago for me, so it's unlikely to have any issues.

Is anyone else having problems with their 20" mounting their USB external drives?

I've tried everything including a 45 minute call with Applecare and they told me to take it into a genius. Any ideas would be helpful--sorry to kinda hijack but it is a HUGE problem for me.

Other than that and two dead pixels, no other complaints.

After I installed boot camp my iMac froze and could not detect any external drive and would not respond to any commands at startup, even resetting the PRAM.

I found out that this has been a problem that has been around for a while with boot camp. Hopefully it will be sorted when Leopard hits.

Other than that, it's one of the best pieces of equipment around and money well spent :)
