It is like that because noone is buying those things. Most people just talk about them because they would love to have them. Most don't even need them. A hint is when all they talk about is encoding videos.

Glad you've made that decision for everyone else.

The simple fact remains -- that other thread is spot-on (Mac truck sized hole in the Apple desktop product line). If you need more power than a mac mini and already have a screen, the only option for you is a Mac Pro unless you want to waste your money on a screen you don't need.

Even though the Mac Pro is more power than I need, I am willing and ready to buy one because I fall into that category.

I was hoping to give all my money to Apple, but as time moves on, I'm more and more looking at putting most of my money into a gaming PC and a refurb iMac. Buying a Mac Pro now is just not smart from a value perspective.

It is like that because when businesses like print production shops and video studios need new workstations, they order them. Graphics, photo and video professionals have got to be the primary market for Mac Pros.

Most of these businesses aren't reading Mac Rumors and waiting for Penryn and Nehalem.

one at at time sales, most likely

I'm sure that you are right about small purchases ("We need 4 more octo-cores or we won't meet the deadline with our next arrogant Mac guy vs. lovable PC dude TV commercial.").

It's also very likely that the people who are looking at bigger projects (like upgrading the whole infrastructure for a studio or shop) *are* in fact looking at Intel's announcements and are in fact waiting for Apple to upgrade the workstation/server line.

Yep. My dad halted all new Mac purchases for a year for all of Research at a hospital (several hundred computers) until the Intel transition was over. It's not an issue at this point because they do a new roll-out every 3 years and it's only been 1-2 since the Intel transition, but I'm adding my 2¢ to point out that people do pay attention to these things.

What about the little guy

I have a small production house and I update one computer about every other year. My G-5 is now over three years old. If I want to get the most out of my purchase I need to get the most up to date equipment.

Sure I could pay a new computer everytime I get a big project or have a deadline to make, but then I would I give all my profits to Apple?

I love my G5 and it served me well, but with all the new fetures of FCS 2 (3d work in motion) it is stating to lag. This will still be a great machine for capturing footage and off line editing, and even as part of a cluster for compressor. But considering I want it to last three years or so, it would be nuts for me to buy the current model.

If the current model was $1000 to $1200 less then I would consider it, and then I could by a new computer every year!

Cheers!

Okay, as we are only 10 - 12 months to go.

Right, the Caneland is only 11 months away, Nehelam (sp) is also only 11 months away. How many are going to wait until that?

Just thought I would try to breath some new life into this thread.

Most are available now except for two of the high-end chips (10 and 25 days delay). So much for the rumors that Apple had snapped up a bunch of chips early.

Hmmm...

You mean those rumours that someone heard from a friend in Tokyo who heard from his cousin in Taiwan whose girl friend's brother in China heard that Apple was buying all the 3.2 GHz Harpertowns?

Amazon is now out-of-stock on the 4-core Mac Pro's as well as the 8-core ones. Their rebate for the 4-core is also gone. Bestbuy and Vanns have been out-of-stock for almost 2 weeks. If we won't see new Mac Pro's till January Apple should at least make sure there are enough of the current ones in stock. Or are they just trying to get rid of the current ones cause something new is coming soon?

I think they will be replacing them with newer models. A month of no supply is a bit long to wait for any company, so my feeling is there might be an announcement soon, with them shipping in December, higher end Penryn systems in January. Hopefully, of course.

Edit: Best Buy has an estimated arrival date of 12/14-12/28/2007.

Penryn and 10.5.2 at MWSF

MacBidouille suggests that the reason MacPros will only be released on 15 January is that Apple was waiting for Intel's new development tools (released last week) and is now partly rewriting Leopard to benefit from SSE4 instructions. They say that 10.5.2 will be the most important intermediary update ever for MacOS.
  • Mac Pros will be available immediately after the keynote.
  • They will all have 8 cores (up to 3.2GHz)
  • New video cards (incl. latest Quadro FX)
  • Blu-Ray as BTO, DVD Studio Pro will be updated to work with BR and will change name (maybe Disk Studio Pro, but they are not sure)
They are not sure whether iMacs and MacBook Pros Penryn will be announced at the same time, but they wouldn't be available immediately.

Apple might also launch some Xserve "Ultra" with Itanium 2 processors.

They consider their source to be close to 100% reliable but couldn't cross-check the information with another source, so they keep this as rumours.

The article is here, in French: http://www.macbidouille.com/news/2007-12-05/#15426

Not much we couldn't guess by ourselves but it's at least reassuring to see that rumours start to appear.

Seems pretty feasible to me. I'm of the belief that Apple were waiting for numerous things for the Mac Pro release, component supply in the quantities they needed and time to make adjustments to Leopard to make it viable for a production enviroment being the big ones. There seems to be a sense on here that it is delayed, I think it's more likely it's on time.

Not sure about the Itanium thing though.

Considering the Itanium is not based on the x86 architecture but IA-64 I wouldn't put too much money on this.

HP now have prices and shipping.

So both Delll and HP now offer: 2x2.83GHz, 1GB RAM, 80GB 7200RPM SATA, NVS 290, DVD ROM, 3 year parts & labour.

Dell T7400 - $4063 - Potential ship date 19th December
Dell T5400 - $3838 - Potential ship date 26th December

HP xw8600 - $4065 - Potential ship date 8th January
HP xw6600 - $3724 - Potential ship date 8th January

What I also found insteresting was Dell stopped offering the 3.2GHz and 3.0GHz 1600MHz FSB processors and 800MHz FB-DIMMs after a very short time on the US site, though on the UK site you can still get 3GHz 1600MHz FSB processors and memory configurations using 1GB and 2GB 800MHz FB-DIMMs. I'm guessing demand was heavy. Neither have offered 2.8GHz 1600MHz processors yet (Cause Apple have bought them all of course ;))

Dell's dropped options before

It's standard practice for Dell to drop BTO options when the lead time gets too long - then re-instate the options when the supply is better.

Delayed new Penryns because Intel processor bugs?

And considering that Apple already bought them all... :D

No, more seriously, this bug only affects Yorkfields, which are desktop processors. Xeons are not affected.
