What is the "Compilations" folder for and can I move the songs up a level?

Like the title says, I do not understand why some of the songs I imported from a CD ended up in the Compilations folder?

Here is the directory path: C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\Compilations.

I would like to remove the artist folders from the Compilations folder and place them in the iTunes Music folder.

I tried making a backup copy of the Compilations folder and dragged the artist folders into iTunes, but it still copied them to the Compilations folder. I even made sure the "Part of a compliation" check box was unchecked before I dragged them.

Any ideas?

The Compilations folder is for albums with multiple artists on the same album.

I wonder why you're seeing that behavior though after unchecking the box.
