From the iPhone User Manual:

When airplane mode is on, (the airplaine icon) appears in the status bar at the top of the screen, and no cell phone, radio, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth signals are emitted from iPhone. You can’t make calls, send or receive text messages, stream YouTube videos, or get stock quotes, map locations, or weather reports.

Why would you want this. The iPhone will always use wifi when available before going to EDGE so this setting is unnecessary.

lock your SIM card

this appears in another post about taking your iPhone overseas. In order to avoid fees for EDGE use but still using free wifi you can take out the SIM card or create a pin for your card in settings, turning off then on the phone and when prompted leave the SIM locked. This will basically downgrade your iphone to an ipod touch.

Settings->General->Network->Data Roaming - Set to OFF

When this is set to Off and you are unable to connect to your native network, the iPhone will not use data services unless on a WiFi network. Apparently

Data Roaming

However, people have posted that you can still receive calls, which will run up a bill. So locking or removing the SIM is the best bet I have found. I can only assume that preventing charges to your bill is the only reason to use wifi only?

Perhaps telling people not to call you???? Just redirect to another number back at home?

Always best never to give out your number. People will only disturb you all the time. :D
