Hi - My mother's G5 iMac has just had its second HD failure. Its with Apple now for fixing and they said its down to the 'port at the back was blocked with dust'.

Is this common? Sounds a tad suspect me.......

Hello. My iMac G5 has also suffered a hard disk failure in the past. The cause was determined to be the "click of death", a problem known to affect Zip disks (from Iomega). I thought regular hard drives were less prone to this problem. Oh well.

As for the OP's question, I would say it depends on where the iMac is placed, and whether or not there are objects blocking the vents.

Cheers

My MacPro has has 2 hard disk failures in the 2 years and my mothers iMac has now had 2 HD failures in the last 3 years.

I'm beginning to think its not just 'bad luck' but something either me or Apple are doing wrong
