I just logged into my AT&T account at wireless.att.com and can verify this. I also tried the "select phone by image" option, which does clearly show "iPhone" and "iPhone Black", although the images used for each appear to be identical.

I'm guessing that the images are the same since no images of the new model have been released. Apple would never give ATT such things, given their track record with leaks. I can only imagine how pissed Apple would be if the photo of the new model was posted too.:p

Iphone Black

IMHO, I don't think AT&T would let that kind of faux pas happen without quickly fixing the problem. I logged in about 20 minutes ago and the option to select an Iphone black was there. I think they are gearing up for an updated Iphone release before the WWDC. As for the photo, I hope it's not a glossy back like it indicates, rather, I would prefer a matte finish like the black macbooks. Another thought is maybe it's intentional, perhaps they are in cahoots with Apple to try and create some hype and drive interest up. The thought that Apple would sell them before AT&T gets them in the stores is very intriguing but I don't think it's plausible but I wish it were. I am betting on an announcement tomorrow with a very short if any wait for availability, Apple cannot afford to lose this much revenue on such an important product.

Yay for options?

I really, really, really hope this is a MB type of move. I don't want a black iPhone and I won't buy one if it is black - I don't care what they put in it. Hopefully there will be two versions - 1 version that looks markedly similar to the current iPhone and a black plastic one for all you people who like plastic (no idea why but I have seen a number of people clamoring for it).

While there have been rumors and some concrete information that there will be multiple carriers in international markets, we haven't heard anything about the U.S. going away from AT&T exclusivity.

To be honest, who would you go to? Does anyone else really have a solid 3G GSM network in the U.S.?

In the US? T-Mobile does, kinda. T-Mobile is in the early stages of implementing their 3G strategy this year. T-Mobile is kind of where AT&T was about 2 years ago.

All of the other carriers that offer 3G are CDMA (Verizon Wireless & Sprint), and we all know that we won't see an iPhone for CDMA anytime soon.

You know, I have to wonder about the abilities of the folks who manage the AT&T website. They've managed to push out the details of non-released products & services a number of times over the past few weeks. It almost seems like incompetence to me. I don't know about you, but if I ran a corporate site like that I'd make sure to have one private site to do development on, a test site to test out what you've developed, and a whole process in place to ensure nothing goes out to the production site until the appropriate time.

Someone else posted on AI that many current phones (Tilt, Blackjack) also have the "black" moniker attached now. Even my Blackberry 8800, which has always and currently only been available in blue, is listed as the "Blackberry 8800 Black".

The mac community is OFFICIALLY in a feeding frenzy the last 2 days......

seems like people are skipping over this response, if "black" is also on the other phones, then obviously this isnt anything.

I too can verify it.

I can't imagine this would show up on ATT's website on May 12 if the product in question weren't going to be announced for a whole month. I think this, along with the Apple Store online being sold out of iPhones might just be indication of a new product coming very, very soon.

Did I miss something while I have been away? AT&T is not the sole provider of the iPhone in the U.S.?
Ummmmm, they're the sole carrier.

I think people are really taking this a little too far, it's just a color option. I'm guessing there will just be color options. Standard and black versions available from ATT and an additional Red option available through Apple Stores. Now maybe the standard version will be 8gb and the black will be 16gb, who knows.

Maybe Tuesday?

Maybe the new Iphone (With 3G and more) (Classic) will be here tomorrow and they are going to a release an Iphone Nano at the :apple: Worldwide Developers Conference in June. :D

I am 99% sure that they have a process like this in place, I highly doubt anyone is editing their live site without testing first on a staging server. They probably just need to hire some real QA people.

Loose Lips

AT&T just can't keep secrets. They don't have infrastructure for it. I think it is because the usual scene with phones is a phone is introduced way, way before it goes on sale. Same with new phone services. So they just don't know how to do testing on the sly. Remember the stories about Apple going to great lengths keeping the original iPhone secret from virtually everyone in AT&T, even the higher ups?

A thought

WHAT IF the black will be simply same one in different color and the 3G model will be more expensive and will come out later??

That's my point. T-Mobile's 3G network is in it's infancy, whereas AT&T is relatively developed. I don't know why you'd switch. The only other network I'd want from a network point of view is Verizon but that's CDMA, and like you said, don't expect a CDMA iPhone any time soon.

I must admit I'm very happy with my iPhone as it is, but I'd like to have a better browsing experience when I'm not connected to WiFi, could anyone tell me if there is a new faster iPhone coming out soon, perhaps using the 3G network?

I totally agree - I would think that someone (or some people) at AT&T has either been fired or yelled at extensively. They look pretty flaky and that's not the sort of thing Apple would drop the ball on.

And, just like someone else said in the AppleInsider forums, the other phones that are listed with the "Black" suffix, do indeed come in black, as well as other color variants. For example, the BlackJack actually comes in red in addition to the normal black. So, the iPhone having a "black" suffix is in line with a separate model.

The Mac community OFFICIALLY does not jump to conclusions as quickly as you do.

We will have to agree to disagree. Time will tell. Using the Blackjack as an example, the original model was black. They introduced a red, and called it the Red. The original iphone was black (at least from the front, which is how AT&T shows the photos for identification purposes). If a new model comes out that is truly all black, it would make no sense to call it the "black". Too much confusion on the part of Joe Consumer.

More importantly, in the case of the BlackJack II (and probably most other cell phones), the black and red are IDENTICAL phones with different color shells. A new and improved model would warrant a name that implied more than a different color.
