When the iPhone arrives, what to do? Drain it fully and then deep charge? Charge it right away? Until full? For 12 hours?

Also, what is the best way to treat the battery to keep it running as long as possible and as healthy as possible?

There is no reason to condition your battery. You won't xtend it's life.

To avoid battery shock, don't let it drain flat very often. This is harder on the battery than frequent top ups.

Drain once in a while - every few months - to recalibrate the percent charged display.

Apple's advice here:

http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html

"Use iPhone Regularly
For proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery, it’s important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally. Be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down)."
