My macbook won't turn off!

hello, I've been having this problem with my macbook, after several days of use (I always put the computer to sleep when not in use) I can't turn it off, there is allways a message that says that log out failed because some application (is always a different application) can't be shut down, this happens even though I've manually closed all aplications (at least the ones that appear on the doc) and most of the time. Some times I can shut it down when I disable the airport but some most of the times the only two ways I can turn off the thing is by manually closing the application "logging application" or by holding down the power botton.

Does anyone knows a solution to this?

How does the disk permissions affect my ability to turn off the system?

I did what you told me, but didn't understand why I did it.

I have a Macbook 2.4Ghz running Leopard 10.5.3, as far as applications the regular built in applications: textedit, mail, safari, ical, itunes and so on, plus firefox, messenger, skype, neo office, Eagle, betterzip, flip for mac, VLC transmission. ahh and Windows XP on boot camp.

I haven't been able determine the possible applications the might be preventing the systems from shutting down.

Based on what I've read here, the SMC reset is not necesary as I can turn off the computer by holding the power button.

What I'm trying to find out is how to turn it off the "regular" way.
