Apple,

Please give me an iMac with quad core and a semi descent GPU and i'm ditching my 6 years old PC and become an apple customer.

Because I'm not buying an outdated imac liek they have now.
Quad-cores are possible (2.27/2.53 GHz 45 W), and so are GPUs (9xxx / HD 3xxx). Whether Apple will implement them is another question, and since the upcoming update is supposed to be "speed bumps," I'm not holding my breath on this.

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough. I mean I found old speculations about what they meant when they talked about product transitions in 2007, and I was surprised because it seems so similar to what you've linked. What I'm trying to say is: they did it again. It means just as much as a year ago.

https://www.macrumors.com/2007/07/26/apples-upcoming-product-transition/

Here you have another example.

Yes, very similar. But I'm not sure I get your drift. You think that Apple talked about a "product transition" but didn't really mean it, just to throw us off? Or they really intended a product transition but for unknown reasons weren't able to accomplish it? Or what they term a "product transition" is different than what we consumers expect it to be? Or something else entirely?

Apple talked about a "product transition" in its recent July financial results conference call:

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...product_transition_before_septembers_end.html

"the mystery transition will drop Apple's gross margins from 34.8 percent in the spring quarter to just 31.5 percent in the July-to-September window in which the update takes place,"

Wouldn't that transition have been the new deal with the iPhone? Its price dropped by half in August, which fits that window they specified.

This joke is really getting old... Maybe we should start a new thread, apple-making-computer-joke-less.

But the important question is whether the joke is as old as the Mac Mini.

Those jokes wouldn't happen if Apple wasn't treating the Macs like iPod/iPhone accessories.

Dear JayTapp,

No.

Love,
Apple.

This Is The Product Transition

I've said this is the last Macbook/Macbook Pro update post, but I'm sticking with my prediction - this is the "product transition" that Apple has been talking about. The Macbook lines are going to be merged, with different options differentiating the models.

I agree with that prediction.

Funny enough, I used to work at store 602...the store that seems to have leaked this inventory snapshot. It's literally down the street from me and is NOTORIOUS for bad customer service/disgruntled employees.

I know someone working at a Futureshop about 20 mins away and I'll see if I can get confirmation from him about the placeholders.

Good idea, I hope you get more info.

i think the "product transition" is more broad than just restricted to the notebooks.

i think it is making all of their products Aluminum rather than plastic.

iMac went aluminum, then the MBPro, the Air is aluminum, so the only product left is the normal MB.

Macbook: 12" (no optical and thinner)
Macbook pro: 12", 15", 17" (no optical and thinner)
Macbook air: 10" (under 2 lbs and thinner)

really is there a point for them to come with drives anymore. I mean who uses the drives enough to warrant the weight and extra cost.

Me? I wouldn't have bought this MacBook if it didn't have a drive.

exactly what I've been thinking ever since.......

I don't know; it's hard to interpret. Apple doesn't really drop enough bread crumbs for us to follow the path to the end. But other things that were said in that call made it sound like the "transition" involved a new or updated product yet to be released.

Regarding merging product lines, some people have speculated there will be a merger of MB and MBA. I can't see this happening because they are products with different capabilities and price points targeting different market segments. A merger of MB and MBP is possible, but in name only. There will still be entry-level and higher-end models, with enough feature differentiation to provide separate price points.

A name merger is needed. A MacBook Pro is really just an "advanced MacBook".

I cant speak for others, but thats what I meant when I said it. The laptop line will just become macbook in load of different sizes + configurations. You would have cheaper, smaller, low end basic configurations going up to bigger, more advanced and more expensive configurations.

Don't worry

As someone who's seen some interesting things, all I can say is that people won't be disappointed.

Nothing to see here, move along

I helped set these skus up. They were set up with no information or assistance from Apple. These were set up as the same time as a long list of placeholders for iPods for the "Let's Rock" event - we weren't sure if there were computers coming at the same time (as you can see in the thread in the Future Shop forums).

So to recap:
  • We setup a bunch of skus.
  • We did so without input from Apple.
  • We did it to be prepared for when new product launches because we find out at exactly the same time you do. Sometimes we get a "you'll see X number of new laptops" but that's the extent of it.
  • We also did it because we wanted to make sure that we weren't setting skus up in the same time frame that they were going to launch because inevitably someone with a camera phone is going to see them in the system and be a little overzealous and fire off a cropped, poorly compressed photo of our inventory system to engadget/gizmodo/macrumors/appleinsider and we figured if we set them up in advance we can avoid tipping Apple's hand in the future. Yes, we're that considerate of our partners. Phew.

Alright. Hope that clears it up for everyone.

LOL, yes but WHICH people? I'm hoping it's the people who need to buy a new MBP in the next two weeks :)

And the people who want a headless upgradeable desktop in the iMac spec range, they could use some lovin' too.

Booooo!

On behalf of the people who aren't in Canada, I'm going over to Future Shop right now to smear finger prints on all the screens :)

What a party pooper! :p

exactly. and that's one of the reasons why the new macbook will have alumn. enclosure.

Sorry to rain on the parade, but I figured it'd be better to get excited about it if it were bonafide and to quash it if it ain't.

I'm the resident Mac nut here and I'm salivating, just slightly, at the prospect of replacing my aging MacBook. That said, we don't have any inside info. The issue in February was a learning experience - while it's great to have inside information, this is Apple we're talking about. They're protective of their launches (with due cause, I think) and so it's better for us to err on the side of caution than not.

So you'll probably see more screenshots like this in the future. I think we're going to be setting up Apple skus on a regular basis (probably right after new ones launch to minimize this sort of thing) in order to keep ahead of the curve and have them ready for when products drop. It also prevents the OMGBLURRYCAM screenshot leaks :)

Again, a thousand apologies for the undue excitement. If the person who had taken the shot did some basic research they could have seen when the sku was created and probably put two and two together... but alas...

But the important question is whether the joke is as old as the Mac Mini.

Those jokes wouldn't happen if Apple wasn't treating the Macs like iPod/iPhone accessories.

LOL!!!!! iphone/ipod accessories, hahahahaha!!! Probably on the same league as the new headphones with the mic and speaker!!!!
