This is quite feasible.

I think we will see push notifications in January, during Macworld keynote. It will probably have some more stuff, but that will be the main feature of 2.3. Maybe they will also make some announcements about true navigation software :) Furthermore they will probably release higher-capacity iPhones around Macworld.

If this is accurate...... it's about time that I'll be able to download podcasts directly to my iPhone. I just hope that the past rumor of "maximum 10 MB" is inaccurate. This feature should have been included along time ago.

But it's true, it doesn't really seem like this update should be called 2.2- it seems like a 2.1.1

I agree completely, I love my podcasts but having to sync to get them can be inconvenient.

What I want to know is what ever happened to turn by turn directions??? THATS the feature I really want!

What about...

Am I the only person who thinks Apple should prioritize improved ActiveSync implementation?

Currently only my topmost folder is push-synchronized from my work's Exchange server. I have lots and lots of sub-folders for various projects and people and none of them receive email via push. I have to go down my list of folders and manually update each one.

As far as I know those of you with sub-folders on an IMAP server experience the same problem.

I'm hoping (praying?) that there will be a lot of "one more thing" features in this update that have not been covered in the various blogs and rumor sites, and that this might be one of them.

The 10mb is a limit put on them by AT&T..it's not Apple doing that to be evil, 10mb over 3G takes a while and takes up bandwidth on an already strained network. Take that and add everyone downloading tons of podcasts...

Basic features still missing!

Hi!

How long are we going to wait for sync-ed notes and to-do list?

I know they're less glamorous than those announced, but they could fill the gap to a true PDA.

- Copy/Past
- Horizontal emailing
- Horizontal SMSing
- Picture/Video messaging (The world's most advanced phone can't do with others could do years ago!)
- Safari stability
- Reworked Network Settings window to give easier access to turning 3G on/off

Just to name a few...

fetch bug is top of my list, street view isn't a terrible addition though.

I hope that the rumor about Google Transit integration is true- that would be a life saver for me. Getting public transit directions on my iPhone right now is nearly impossible, so that would be such a big help.

Maybe I read this wrong but your app wont get updated information. It's a notification so the app icon on the home screen will get a notification(Numbers probably) that something has changed and when you open the app it's the apps job to update itself. So for IM's if the app supports it the icon will probably show how many messages are waiting for you, when you open the IM app it should update to show you these new messages.

Push was demoed at the launch of the iphone by Apple SVP of iPhone software Scott Forstall and was promised to be released in September.

Insert complaints of lack of push notification promised at launch and then in September ...

I don't care about push notifications... I just want them to fix fetching email while idle that they completely destroyed in 2.1 when it was flawless in 2.0.2.

Oh and tethering ffs!

I don't care what AT&T think or want. I live in the UK and have sweet FA business with AT&T - my contract is with O2. I can tether my XDA Orbit, why not my iPhone?

When push notification does arrive, it will allow developers to push notifications in three forms:

  • Textual alerts (similar to SMS bubbles)
  • Audio alerts
  • Badges (like Mail)

These will be pushed from the developers server(s) up into the cloud (Apple's back-end Push Notification Service),
and forwarded through IP to the designated application.

Apple needs to stop dicking around with these updates. Stop adding in things that are completely superfluous, and focus on the core functions: phone, SMS, email. Give us individual SMS timestamps and deleting, a unified email inbox, lock screen email notifications, more reliable email fetch, user profiles (for sounds and network settings), etc.

i think we are just spoiled as iphone owners.... we keep getting updates while most other phones just stay as they are forever... or very minor updates... i am glad that we get updates on the phone as we keep getting new things and more stablility with updates.

Yes, but at least other phones have copy and paste, MMS..etc.

I doubt this will be released on the 21st. However I would welcome any updates, as little and pointless as they might be to others.

I would say "I can't wait" but I will wait and then come back here to see how many people it screws before I download it.

I think it is pretty cool that we have a phone that "evolves." Look at what the 1st gen phone can do now compared to 18 months ago....

Ya, it evolved into a piece of crap phone. I never had any issues with 1.x, now that 2.x is here...nothing but problems.

Safari needs the most help, no doubt about it!!

hope less crash on safari.

I agree 100%, if there is a major disappointment with IPhone, for me, it is Safari. As you say crashes way to much. More features would be nice here but stability is huge, Safari shouldn't crash on simple forum type sites.
