I decided to return to iLife '08. The faces and places features don't really work for me and I don't want to clutter the GUI. I also miss Keyword Manager...

Get review, will definitely take your thoughts into consideration.

It was not intended to be any type of review OBVIOUSLY!!. I guess you have yet to develop the skills necessary to kick IN gear your common sense.
As a fellow human, I am pretty sure somewhere down the line of you trying to be insightful and a moron intelligence resides. So, I suggest you properly take my consideration and learn about what the diffrence is between an opinion & a review. Till then I hope you take care of yourself. And I hope you dont think every reply to a THREAD TITLED (OPINIONS OF IPHOTO FACIAL RECOGNITION ACCURACY?) is meant to be replied with a review only. I mean I did my part I gave my opinion on what I think of the software.

hAVE AN AWESOME DAY READING REVIEW AFTER REVIEW OF IPHOTO 09.

Are you saying the Keyword Manager will not work with iPhoto09?

I use Keyword Manager extensively and was thinking of getting iLife 09 (mainly for iMovie) but losing Keyword Manager would stop me from using iPhoto.

Thanks.

Confuses gay guy with neighbor girl.

I kid you not! Faces was working well until I named our 18 year old neighbor girl Beth. It went through and found pictures of her back when she was 13. I was amazed. But then it also ID's a gay family male friend as Beth. Even after I named him as David, it still thinks he is Beth. Then we pulled up pictures in similar poses and he has very similar eyes and lips to her. Strange!

iPhoto

I think it basically measures the distance between peoples' eyes because it really can't handle sunglasses at all.

I find the facial recognition works fairly well, but even when it doesn't it's really not that big of a deal till you try to upload them to FB. Somehow all the names are tagged as people that don't have FB.

Ahh, the unwarranted, explosive fury of the online forum response. There's nothing quite like it.

I have ordered iLife 09 but it hasn't arrived yet. I was just wondering, do the people who get good recognition of faces take a lot of photos at parties etc. where everyone is staring straight at the camera, or the cheek-to-cheek, arm outstretched style? I have a few of these, but they're probably the photos I least care about being tagged.
I guess what I'm asking is does it work better with certain types of photos or does it depend more on the person? I'm willing to bet it'll recognise every photo of my friend's girlfriend. In real life she looks exactly like she does in photos. That sounds crazy, I know, but you'd understand if you met her.
Not that I have that many photos of my friend's girlfriend...

ok, the automatic recognition doesnt work well but at least if u make the effort to go through all photos and assign the correct names to faces and name all places, then iPhoto 09 offers a very nice way of organizing your pics.

Isn't that a good use of Keywords? I already have Keywords for my wife and children. These are already associated with each photo of them.

I read in another post that Keyword Manager is gone under iLife 09. Can someone confirm that. If it is so, I'll skip '09!!!!

favorably impressed

First impressions were very favorable for my brother (10k+ photo library) and myself (14k+).

From my library Faces ID'd about 600 pictures of my mother. It correctly picked her out from photos ranging from when she was 18, to today (87). One was a photo of a photo of her and my dad, the framed photo shot lying on the floor to copy it, and still oriented as a horizontal instead of a profile orientation, and with some glare from the glass, yet it ID'd her. In another there were ten or twelve family members in the foreground and she was ID'd in the distant background. It's hard not to be impressed by that, hard not to be optimistic about how the function may eventually prove very useful.

Yes, 5-10 percent of the 600 were not my mother. My family has long kidded about a distinctive "look" from generation to generation and i'd say 90% of the errors were children, grandchildren. People we already would have generalized "look like" mom. The other 10% were amusing mistakes, that's the best i can say.

It took iPhoto about 4 hrs to process the pix the first time i opened it. It took me about an hour to go thru the 600 photos it suggested were my mother, confirming them or dismissing them. I agree with others who have noted here that the double-clicking to reject false matches is annoying ... even a command-click would be easier.

I suspect operator error--or at least, initial lack of operator knowledge and expertise--has something to do with some of the negative reports here. I know i couldn't figure out how to batch-confirm or reject matches: Is that really a lacking feature? I know i have more to learn about utilizing the feature and i suspect it'll work even better as i gain that knowledge.

Lastly, i don't know how many images my mother appeared in that were NOT selected as matches for her.

From what I've read, option+click rejects. You can also drag and highlight multiple photos to batch-accept (and possibly reject).

It does well on some faces in my library and not so well on others.

My wife suggested to do a smaller block of the total suggestions and click 'Done' rather that walk through the entire batch. When I did this, the accuracy improved considerably, so it does appear to 'learn'.

Also, if you are doing a batch and click somewhere else, you lose what has been confirmed too, so it's actually a good habit.

Another thing I noticed is that the more faces you add to the library, the more accurate it has become too, since it 'knows' about more individuals.

Keep persisting, as I went through literally 1000's of faces last night in a relatively short period of time...

Another shortcut: hold down the 'option' key to mark a set of 'misses' en masse.

Very Impressed with Faces

Just went through a few people and I am very impressed. Once it starts suggesting photos its goes really fast to confirm. Make the thumbs small and I can cruise at about 80-100 a minute for the confirm and deny.

On a side note. I was going through iPhoto and confirming pics when I zoomed on one I did not like, so I clicked delete so it would go to the trash, but it just removes it from the group of pictures and then there was no undo option available. I wish I could just delete a picture when confirming pictures, never realized how bad some pictures are until you start looking a faces.

Edit
I should also be able to right click while skimming and select the key photo for Faces, instead I have to open the face pictures, find the picture and then set to Key Photo. It should work Exactly like events.

So far, I am having pretty good luck with it! I wasn't expecting much after reading a lot of feedback, but so far, mine is doing a good job. I

And, like most new software, I'm sure it'll only get better with time/updates.

iPhoto'09 is all buggy!

Check Events. Go inside the album and see how the scrollbar changes from blue to white. Was it this way in iPhoto'08 too? (does this happen only for me?). Makes me wonder - somewhere sometime ago someone spoke about Marble theme.. is this that?

On some occasion while tagging faces from ".. may also be in the photos below", iPhoto loses track of already tagged photos. It also goes in a different order to tag faces than the photos it shows on first screen.

Overall, for those who don't have it, you aren't missing anything great. And those who have it, hope that an update comes soon.

(Was :apple:iLife'09 released pre-mature?)

Update: The videos on Apple's website also shows white scroll bar. Did anyone notice closely, when you click on Name button in a new photo with unrecognized faces, in the videos on Apple's website, a spotlight search glass appears. It doesn't happen in my iPhoto. Does it happen for others? (Check the video on the website if you did not understand what I just said) :)

I have to say... it sucks!

If I were new to face recognition, I would have been impressed. But with previous experience on Google's Picasa Web Album, I would like to say Apple sucks this time! A few points to note:

1. "Face" detection itself is not accurate. Just to identify if it is a face is not that difficult for nowaday's technology, but I've found that at least half of the faces in my photos are not tagged. My observation is that if the head tilts a bit, left or right, up or down, side to side, it won't be tagged!! How many photos have faces that look right and straight into the camera? This is simply not acceptable. I don't care if it can tag my puppy or kitten, please work well on human beings!!

2. Tagging one photo at a time is totally inefficient! I want batch tagging like that on Picasa Web Album. That's a lot faster! Tagging photo one by one? Sorry, I don't have the patience.

3. Face recognition is not accurate. For those who think it works well on your Mac, please try Picasa Web Album before saying the word "good" or "well". Apple please acquire more mature algorithm to get it done. Also, for unknown faces, please at least make a wild guess and give me a list of identities to choose from. I don't want to type all the time. For those suspecting identities, that is "Is this xxx?", please provide a list of possible matches below the tick or cross button so that incorrect guesses can be corrected efficiently.

Last but not least, you may think that I'm a promoter from Google. Sorry, I'm not. I'm no Google fans. I'm just a disappointed iPhoto '09 user. I love Garage Band, iMovie and iWeb. I love the Places feature in iPhoto '09. But Apple should seriously update the Faces feature as soon as possible.

My patience ended after tagging one album. I'll wait until the next update and tag the rest again.

I have to say, it does NOT work as advertised at all.

It started out OK with one or two faces, but it seems that the more it learns, the less accurate it gets, to a point where I just don't get any suggestions any more.

Things like sunglasses and hands in front of faces seem to make things work - I guess it's "learning" these features, so it becomes less likely to recognise a face without glasses/hands/whatever.

Also, what happens when I want to "tag" someone whose face is only partially visible or not visible at all? If I'm going to organise my photos by name, then I want to tag everyone... but it's not going to do iPhoto any good to try to "learn" the back of someone's head. I guess what I need is the ability to tag someone but tell iPhoto "do not learn from this".

Overall, I'm extremely disappointed.

I'm mildly impressed. It takes a bit of work to get your library up to snuff, but it's a very useful feature. No, it's not perfect. But for a 1.0 feature, it kicks. It seems like about 5 or 6 samples is what it takes to really start learning faces.

As for places, it's really nice if you have an iPhone, but I wish I could pinpoint exactly where stuff was taken without geotagging. I know where my house is on the map, and I'd like to move the pin to there. I just may not have searched enough yet to figure that out, but it would help. Also, it has my city as a nearby one when photos are geotagged instead of what my post office says. That kinda annoys me. I'm within a mile of where the ZIP changes. Something to work on.

I'd be interested to know what people are doing here, as well. I want Faces to show me the pictures of everyone, but obviously I don't want it to learn that so-and-so has a hand in front of their face.

iPhoto FACES is Awesome

I have thousands of photos, mainly of family. I spent a few minutes looking at a few larger photos that have three to five people in them. After naming those people, iPhoto began to go through all of my photos and recognizing faces. Over 90% accuracy. It looks like as you confirm faces, others will then appear, based on similarities to those you confirm. It doesn't seem to pick up all of the faces at first, but as you confirm little by little, the program gets better and better. Once you rule out ("not confirm" in red) faces that are not who they are, accuracy improves even more.

Another complaint from many people is having to "confirm" photos one by one. You can make the thumbnails smaller on your screen (lower right corner of iPhoto), then drag a box over the photos that you want to confirm. You can hold ALT/OPTION and do the same for those to "not confirm" quickly. Users do not need to confirm one by one, as many people posting here have mentioned having issues about. I wonder if this hint is mentioned by Apple in their tutorial videos online?

Overall, I think this new feature is very useful. To have a way to filter thousands of photos down to a few hundred that a single person is in with a click of a button is almost too easy! Way to go Apple.

I'd be interested to know what people are doing here, as well. I want Faces to show me the pictures of everyone, but obviously I don't want it to learn that so-and-so has a hand in front of their face.

that is one of the biggest drawbacks of this feature. Keywords are so much better at the moment
