Is it worth upgrading the stock 4200 rpm (cache)? drive to say a 5400 rpm 8mb cache? Would their be a noticeable difference? The Ibook has a g3 500mhz , 640mb of ram.

Could this laptop run Ubuntu 8.10 PPC (community version) fine?

Should i just buy a laptop drive and run it through firewire instead of ripping the computer apart to get the stock drive out?

Best os for the above specs:

Mac osx 10.3 - 10.4
Ubuntu ppc 7.10- 8.04 -8.10 ppc (community version)
Yellow Dog Linux

Laptop will be used to surf the web.

Thanks!

When my G4's 4200rpm with 2mb cache drive died, I replaced it with a 5400rpm drive with 8mb cache. There was indeed a noticeable improvement in performance.

However, it was quite a pain in the ass to get to the hard drive. That was the first time though, so I could probably do it easier if I ever had to again. I think it took me about an hour with ifixit guides to disassemble, but only 15 minutes or so to put it all back together.

I only ended up with 1 left over screw too!! :D
